Title says it all. I'm thinking about doing it. Why? I'm doing the body work, and I start noticing that the roof has already been done at least once. And somebody got a little happy with the grinder. I figure the thick coating with texture will hide these scrapes pretty easily, whereas paint will not. Anybody have any thoughts? Pics of my bodywork coming soon, I'm excited not to have any more rust holes behind the wheel wells.
Do it. It will keep the drip rails (rain gutters) from rusting too. The big Q: do you stop at the top of the windshield or go down the A pilars? I'd include them just to coat the entire length of the drip rails.
I was thinking about stopping at the top, but you make a good point. I just finished chipping all of the silicone out of the drip rails, so something has to go back in.
I have been planning to line-x my roof too, color matched to the body. The paint up there is shot, and salt water drips on the roof all the time from my kayaks being loaded onto the roof. I'd only be having the roof itself sprayed, not the columns. But I would like to know how hard it was to chip the silicone out of the rain gutters? I plan on having the lower portion of the interior done at the same time as the roof, and I'll have the lower 1/4 sprayed (black) when I get more $.
I had planned on Line'x'n the roof and down the A pillars. My gutters have a fair amount of rust, from water gathering where the rack was mounted, so much that it is starting to creeped towards the roof under the paint, ugh! (luckily this is only in two places) I have to address it sometime. I'm not sure how to go about the windshield. If I should remove it or just have the linex go under the rubber. Would you post some pics if get yours done?
why not just fix it properly? Its your rig but if you are ever going to sell it in the future it would be a huge detractor. I would personally avoid any rig with bed liner on it. Bed liner is for beds.;p
And don't do it in black. Either paint it afterwards (I think you can paint the stuff anyway) or have them spray on the colored stuff. The black roof would make for a hot hot hot rig in the summer!
I will be having my roof color matched, and tend to think that it may add to the value. Am I off? Well anyone who buys my truck will not be buying it because it is OE. Having a lined roof will make the seams waterproof, rust free, and the paint up there will never oxidze. Plus the interior will be the same. I'll take pictures, but it's going to be a while.
I was looking more at the DIY products. I'm starting to second guess that decision, and don't know what I"m going to do at this point. But she's almost ready for paint. If somebody looks close enough at the roof now, they will see what some previous owner had done some obvious rust removal (he got happy with the grinder) and I was trying to hide the imperfections, for me, not because I"m trying to sell it. But you are right if I was buying one and saw bedliner on the roof it would make me wonder.
As far as getting rid of the old silicone. Mine was not a factory job, was sloppy and gooped in (again PO) and it was cheap, so it chipped out with a screwdriver, took me maybe an hour.
As far as increasing or decreasing value, I don't plan on selling it for a long while, if ever, but don't know if this is going to be the look I want on my truck permanently. While we have this thread running does anybody have a pic handy of a blue cruiser with bedliner on the lower beltline, I'm thinking it might not look right wiht the blue, and will dig through the registry tonight, but if someone has one handy....
Sorry, I know this is a super old thread but I'm planning on "Durabak" Sand, textured for my tan 60's roof.
The paint on my roof is in great condition, the gutters aren't rusted, nor do they leak. I'm about to install my INTI rack and knowing that once installed it will be difficult to clean and polish the roof. Secondly, I can carry up to (7) 20l fuel cans a long the front edge of the rack and it one or many should leak, I don't want it dripping on the bare paint. So, my roof will never rust, the color will be a very close match, the gutters will never leak, it will add some rigidity and a non slip grip to the roof.
I'll take pics when I hit the task in about a month, once I return my from vacation here in Afghan.
Jake at Durabak has been at my beck and call with every question I’ve asked
