I posted a wanted AD and someone in the forum sent me a reply with a potential seller's email. I contacted him, but by the way the "seller" communicated with incorrect pictures (incorrect model year,) and then coming up with excuses made me suspicious. Glad I did not fall into the trap.

MAKE SURE you see the item in front of you before you make any payment.

I’ve sent thousands of dollars to people all over the country that I met on this site and knock on wood have never been screwed once. I do a little research and I am cautious. Fortunately it’s worked fine for me so far. Thanks good people.

I’ve also done significant buying on this site and only been burnt by one well known member in SoCal who stole a carburetor from me. Claimed he lost it at his house and couldn’t find it…Other than that one thief , never had a bad transaction.

check user/seller stats… how long on mud? number of messages and likes etc. if just joined recently and only a few messages… watch out
The very first thing I bought for my FJ on here was from Swamp Thing. He not only sold me the parts he sent me measurements to aid in the installation. It was bumper brackets that are normally riveted to the frame.

I agee with you all. I have done many transactions on forums and been all pleseant. This was one bit too sketchy as the "seller said he got parts I need, when requested he does not have the year I wanted. Then he claimed he have it and send an incorrect picture.

Likewise, I've met tons of really great folks on Mud classifieds and have generally had great experiences buying and selling. But recently I had someone respond to one of my posts that raised suspicions: The person named “Kelly” on I8Mud.com suggested that I reach out to 'johnmccarthy0081@gmail.com' regarding a purported original equipment Aisan carburetor for our August 1970 Toyota FJ40. He said that he had one that he would be interested in selling. Since there were no pictures and "Kelly" had no real presence on Mud. It seemed like a scam. So beware of this person.

So post the person's conversation with you and their screen ID

- you should POST up this topic and the related communication PM screen shots without question here .............

-
why some folks may ask here ?

- because , there are 2 possible scenarios here :

- 1 : it was as you stated above , and you were very very smart to end the transaction when you did , good job there !

- or ..........

- 2 : somebody , whom has little to NO land cruiser parts knowledge , did not know any better , and made a honest mistake ?

- the 2nd possible scenario is more troublesome to me , because here on MUD folks are supposed to be straight up and honest , if you do not know a technical topic

regarding parts in any way , you have NO business trying to pon off what you have no clue what you exactly have in the first place ...

The seller's email id is "johnsonman3214"

Followings are the pictures he sent. Notice the starter location and Difflock actuator on 1st picture. Seller said it is from a 2002. The second picture is from a 99 but still incorrect bellhousing with incorrect starter position.

Unfortunately, I cannot locate the PM or email I received from the mud member.

Some conversations are:

"What year is the donor vehicle? Is this used or rebuilt?"

Reply "Okay... It's hardly used, I'm located in Missouri I have the one from 1997 and 2005"

"The 2000 works with years 99-02."

Reply "Yes it works with 1999 to 2002" [I know 2005 will not fit a 2000}

"IS it from what year?

Any pictures?" [Received the 1st picture)

Reply: " Okay... this is from 2002 donor"
