Just getting my ducks in a row for a R151 rebuild and massing loads of info from forums and transmissiom shop u tubes.
The local guru here in South Africa swears by precision clearance settings and removing the bearing seals and using torque fluid454 as a gearbox and transfer case oil.

Obviously I go along with the precision clearance settings, but I would appriciate some thoughts and discussion on the bearing seals and choice of oil.

I came across a forum post some time back about removing the seal for bearings and the general consensus was to leave the seal alone. Some guys had reported bearing failure issues when the seal was removed.
If I find the thread I will post it up...
Found it.. 4x4Wire - Overhauling the Toyota/Aisin R151F Transmission
There is a paragraph about the seals and experience Marlin Crawler had regarding this. And they are one of the gurus on Toyota gears....

:worms::)

I got my R150 box rebuilt last year at the local transmission specialist, a good size operation with years of experience... I asked the workshop manager if there was a variety of oil that they would recommend, 'just any decent quality gear oil of the right spec' was the answer.

Cheers

Exactly, there is no magic oil. Gearboxes and engines were doing high mileage decades ago with just standard brand oils. Its all about sticking with the service intervals and how you drive them.

I did my R151 with tight clearaces, seals still on bearings, and a few upgrade parts from Marlin Crawler.

For oil I used Redline MT-90. I think that the only key that I have heard is to use a GL-4 oil and not a GL-5 oil. The GL-4 is supposed to work better with our syncros.

What were the warning signs that you needed to rebuild your gear box, Grease?

I have to agree on the oil, just that TF 454 was a new one on me. And yes, you do not need the friction modifiers of GL-5 messing with the synchros.

G'Day Fella's,

As RoscoFJ73 said above, I have replaced the oil in both Diff's, G/Box and T/Case, every 30,000 Kms.
Been doing this since new and so far, I've had no issues.

Hope that helps

Hello,

x2.

A good quality gear oil changed at regular intervals will do. Make sure it fits the manual specifications.

Grease, do you remember which Marlin parts you used?? I'm thinking the retainer plate, thrust washer and outpu oil seal? anything i misssed?
There is also banging on about a fully splined 3rd gear? I have not yet worked out if this is an aftermarket part or a later model improvement from Toyota. Any info on this??

Is this something to do with the early split 2 piece shaft that was later made into one piece about 96?
