I'm out.

Got no clearance Clarence. (yet)

I am going. ru? By ten it should be a balmy 50 degrees. I am bringing the 40. This was the first trip I did with BBCNN---back in 2004(03?) I believe.

This is an in and out the same way, quick trip, right? My :princess: wants to go on a date that night.

I'm up for it, I could skip the ride out on Forest service roads.

Are you going to trailer the 40 up Mark?

Not I. But have fun!

No trailer this trip. It would take me longer to hk up the trailer, load the beast and strap in than it would to drive there. Just have to brave the elements in the am:crybaby:. High of 69, should be nice and sunny on the way home:banana:

So just us? Get Joe to go!

Joe has a broken brake line, no money to fix it, and doesn't want to ride along. :meh:

I might get :princess: to go.

Sounds good. Hope others feel they can come along. Good time to get up there with the leaves and view and all. I invited my:princess: but she remembers the kidney damage she had from going out the Verdi way. I told her we weren't doing that trail but still no interest. Oh well her loss. See ya sat.

We had a overheating issue with the 60 and turned around mid way through. Not sure what was going on yet, it was running in the normal range on the freeway and McCarren but heated up as soon as we slowed down. Kind of makes me think the fan clutch is fubar.
Anyway made it home safe hope the rest of the group had an uneventful trip after we parted ways.

The fan clutch was defiantly toasted, lucky for me Shawn has a spare he will let me have. :grinpimp: I'm helping him get rid of the 2F in his garage one part at a time. I'm just glad this happened on HLT instead of on the Bass Camp trip.

Yeah, that would have likely required a long tow... and some fun wrenching at the shelf/sand option obstacle.

Mark and I had a nice ride to Hunter Lake after we left you. :steer: And Mark's a great spotter + rock stacker. Got me twice safely over the only nasty (for me) obstacle on that trail.

I don't know if I would put a used fan clutch on your rig. They do wear out (as you have learned), so I don't think I would put a used one on that may or may not be any good. Do it once. Just me.

Edit: Found it through Napa for $65 without a discount of any kind. That's good piece of mind.

Good point. I seem to remember a section of the 2F FSM that deals with re-furbishing the fan clutch. My plan was to go through it before I install it. If there are no service instructions I'll probably go with the NAPA part.

As most 80 owners have learned, even the replacements can be weak. So the normal thing is to buy some 10k CST Silicone from your local RC car shop and drain the old out and fill it with new. RC cars use it in the rear diff and the different thicknesses control how "tight" the differential differentiates.

As you might have figured out, there isn't too much else to go wrong with a fan clutch. The silicone breaks down and then it is no good.

Just be careful, too much and what little power/mileage you have will take a hit if the clutch is set up too tight.

I had a radiator shop told me that the average fan clutch looses about 100 rpm per year after a couple of years in use.

The worst part is draining to old silicone out, it is gooey stuff that is hard to clean up an takes a while to drain out.

I haven't pulled the old one yet but it had something worse than the fluid breaking down happen. It wobbles all over the place when you wiggle it. I probably won't get a chance to work on it for a while, to much other stuff going on right now.
