Started the car today and I had my battery light turn on. When I started to give it gas, the speedometer dropped to 0 the AC started blasting, all the dash lights turned on. If I let off the gas, the speedo jumps back up and then the lights turn off. I got a P500 vehicle speed sensor fault code, which I would think is more of a symptom than a cause. Battery voltage was 12.9 resting 14.4 at idle and jumping up to 18 plus when I give it gas. I'm guessing a voltage regulator is bad? Alternator issue?

I dont think 18v is a good thing

Why? My drill likes it! I'm glad it got me home running like that. Ran smooth as ever... I guess the ecm has its own regulator.

Today I have a totally dead battery. I am attempting to charge it back up (still had plenty of water/electrolyte) not sure if it was from overcharging it and damaging it, or if something is draining it. Any ideas on troubleshooting that? or does it all seem consistent with a bad alternator?
Thanks,
James
