It's Complicated
Ok first off no bitching about pictures, or lack thereof. I am a retard and forgot my camera.
I am doing my best to track some down and will post them as soon as I get them.
We got down to Ensenada about noon on Wed and after a last minute rush to get the fuel (ours got held up at the border) we sent all south to their respective chase locals.
I helped get the car to the start and then hauled butt down to El Crucero which is just off highway 1 a little north of Bahia de Los Angeles. As soon as we had met up with the Yokohama truck and our pit set up we got word that the crew chasing from San Felipe south to Puertocitos had missed their fuel dump.
We then had a mad dash to get north to CoCo's Corner and fuel the car to make it to El Crucero.
While waiting there Travis Pastrana set up a pit to change into the Class 1 car he was going to drive. I chatted him up a bit and he is a real nice kid.
We then pitted our car and hauled to beat them south to our original pit in El Crucero. We got them there and pitted them agian for fuel and another spare tire. Took off again to follow them on the access road to Bahia de Los angeles and finally got them topped off on fuel and spares before breaking off the chase.
We stayed the night there in Bay of LA and headed south to a secluded bay called Bahia Las Animas. Drank
's and collected all the clams we could carry to our camp and steamed them with beer and ate them with a home made spicy marinara sautee. Who says you have to eat bad?
Three more nights of fresh clams followed.
We took off north on the race course and drove the 250 or so miles over a couple of days through Bay of LA,CoCo's, Gonzaga Bay, Punta Final, Puertocitos, and finally to a friends house in Campo Bahia Santa Maria to fix a dead battery and bad electrical. Amazingly the only problem with the truck (not mine) the whole trip. One stuck in Punta Final sand but we were pulled out on no time as others were around. Very good time.
Officially we finished 14th in Class 1 (49 starters) with a time of 38:20:04. A little slow but with 35 not even finishing the race it is a good showing to even finish. We were very fast untill El Arco south of our breaking off the chase where car troubles added 6 hours of time.
Not to burst Simon's bubble but Rod Millen in the FJ Cruiser finished second in class with a time of 34:37:18. He crossed the finish line ahead of the class winner but wound up just 34 seconds behind.
Congrats Simon!
The one picture I have is Travis Pastrana's crash about 5 miles south of us south of Bay of LA. About 10pm he caught a whoop bad and stuck the nose of the car into the next whoop and end over. Both were ok but the car burned to the ground. It was the first race the car had run and it was just completed a month or so ago.
