Ok first off no bitching about pictures, or lack thereof. I am a retard and forgot my camera. I am doing my best to track some down and will post them as soon as I get them.

We got down to Ensenada about noon on Wed and after a last minute rush to get the fuel (ours got held up at the border) we sent all south to their respective chase locals.

I helped get the car to the start and then hauled butt down to El Crucero which is just off highway 1 a little north of Bahia de Los Angeles. As soon as we had met up with the Yokohama truck and our pit set up we got word that the crew chasing from San Felipe south to Puertocitos had missed their fuel dump. We then had a mad dash to get north to CoCo's Corner and fuel the car to make it to El Crucero.

While waiting there Travis Pastrana set up a pit to change into the Class 1 car he was going to drive. I chatted him up a bit and he is a real nice kid.

We then pitted our car and hauled to beat them south to our original pit in El Crucero. We got them there and pitted them agian for fuel and another spare tire. Took off again to follow them on the access road to Bahia de Los angeles and finally got them topped off on fuel and spares before breaking off the chase.

We stayed the night there in Bay of LA and headed south to a secluded bay called Bahia Las Animas. Drank  's and collected all the clams we could carry to our camp and steamed them with beer and ate them with a home made spicy marinara sautee. Who says you have to eat bad? :D Three more nights of fresh clams followed.
We took off north on the race course and drove the 250 or so miles over a couple of days through Bay of LA,CoCo's, Gonzaga Bay, Punta Final, Puertocitos, and finally to a friends house in Campo Bahia Santa Maria to fix a dead battery and bad electrical. Amazingly the only problem with the truck (not mine) the whole trip. One stuck in Punta Final sand but we were pulled out on no time as others were around. Very good time.

Officially we finished 14th in Class 1 (49 starters) with a time of 38:20:04. A little slow but with 35 not even finishing the race it is a good showing to even finish. We were very fast untill El Arco south of our breaking off the chase where car troubles added 6 hours of time.

Not to burst Simon's bubble but Rod Millen in the FJ Cruiser finished second in class with a time of 34:37:18. He crossed the finish line ahead of the class winner but wound up just 34 seconds behind. Congrats Simon!

The one picture I have is Travis Pastrana's crash about 5 miles south of us south of Bay of LA. About 10pm he caught a whoop bad and stuck the nose of the car into the next whoop and end over. Both were ok but the car burned to the ground. It was the first race the car had run and it was just completed a month or so ago.

Nope. I drove south through the crash site and it was just bad luck. Two 16" whoops spaced a good distance apart in the middle of fast straight away.

Sounds like you had fun. Steamed clams - yummy!

I just noticed that if you look close in the picture the roof and front mounted HID's are still on. :eek:Did indeed have a great time.

Glad you made it back safe.

I looked for you on Wednesday in Ensenada, but got sidetracked by the Tecate girls!!

I wish I could have seen some of the race, but the party at the Horsepower Ranch was pretty cool. :D

Bummer, we were in the fenced in San Nicholas Hotel parking lot right next to the line of trucks and buggies going to contingency. Would love to have bought you a Pacifico.
Glad the party was good. I had to miss out due to a last minute race fuel crisis and tourist card issue.

I have a nice digital still camera and also a nice DV camcorder if you ever need any assistance in capturing memories in the future on one of these trips ;) . I am very FREE and only require a few beers to keep me quiet and out of the way.

Thanks for the report, great pic, and glad everyone was alright. From what I understand about the sport (very litte) finishing is a great accomplishment which takes a lot work, skill, and luck.

Ok finally found some pictures. Team is still not back yet so I had to search elswere.

First one is Ikowa Hanawa, a race driver from Japan and believe it or not that is a Land Cruiser Prado. Well as much as a full custom race truck can be called that. We chased for him in 2004 when we couldn't race our own and he is a great guy.

Second is 116 at the top of the page before the barbeque. First start.

Third is Rod Millen in the FJ that Simon helped build.

First is our car early in the race as you can still see the graphics.

Second is another FJ, who knew there were two.

Third is blurry but I think it is a cool shot of Rod at the finish line.

Mo sick...sick...sick. Happy to hear that you got back safe. My buddy chased for Wide Open again this year he chased from BFG pit 3 to pit 4. I believe this was where you were.

BFG Pit in Larado.Pit boss there was a grumpy dude.We started to have engine problems about a mile brefore this, next to the dump.I had to pull Rod out of there to a clearing with the 80.It was the Mass air flow that caused us so many problems and cost us all that time.

Thanks Tare, good time indeed. We wound up circling the entire Baja Norte and I sure wished I had my 80. I am just nervous driving around in a 2wd Ford! In his defense his truck is running King triple bypass and king 2.5 coilovers front and Deavers and King triple bypass rear. It is acutally a 4 wheel drive but it is waiting for new front axles that couldn't get done in time for the race. I am just more comfortable with the go anywhere ability I know is in my rig. That and going as fast as that truck is capable of as a passenger is tough for a driver type like me. :o I like to be in control of the vehicle I am traveling in.

Simon, congrats man. You guys kicked ass. I didn't mean to steal your thunder but I couldn't help but brag about your results. Sorry I missed you. Will have to meet up for a Pacifico in the states.

thanks for the report and pix.....both of you...
