Backfire?

Is it possible?
It happened at freeway speed, on a slight incline, with the cruise control on. Upon decreasing speed with the cruise control I heard a pop from the right rear of the FJC. I did it 2 other times in the same stretch of freeway with the cruise control. I pulled off the road to check to see if there was anything hanging off that might have just whacked into the vehicle.

Backfires should never happen on a new vehicle. I'd think the computer would have registered an error if that's what really happened, and likely turned on the check engine light.

Was it really loud like a gun firing, or what it more like something banging on something else?

One of the three noises was very loud. The other two almost sounded like something hitting the vehical. The engine check light did come on momentarly after it sat for ~8 hours. I'm not sure if that has to do with an oil change needed in 500miles.

Sticky valve? Timing issue?

Since your CEL came on, your computer would have logged the error. Get the code pulled and see what you've got.

Do what LandCrusher'70 said, and go get the codes pulled from the vehicles computer to see what they say. If nothing comes up, it could have just been some debris on the road, or something with that section of road, or the guy next to you in his old PO$.

The oil change notification is done by a "Maintenance Required" light. Mine didn't come on until 5K miles, and that's probably a pre-set mileage for it to come on at. I also wouldn't change the oil until you’re done with your break in period, which according the owners manually should be 1000 miles. I put synthetic in mine after that.

This could happen if you use gas with low octane.

I know how to get the codes from my Toyota pickup. How do I get the codes on the FJC?

You'll need to hook up a code reader to your vehicle. Go to Autozone/PepBoys/Napa/etc, or the Dealer and they can do it for you.

I had that problem on another vehicle of mine. It was due to a home made aftermarket intake that was on the car when I bought it. I'd call the guy I bought it from stupid for putting it on, but I appearently was to stupid myself to realize it was way to small for the car. Luckly I had also gotten the stock intake box with the car.
