I just did my knuckles/trunnion bearings, etc, and used the harbor freight parts cleaning tub, along with a gallon of parts cleaner, though diesel fuel, kerosene, that purple stuff, or even simple green will work.
Elbow grease and a wire brush doesn't hurt, either.
