Happy Friday all -- I pulled my 3rd member to have the rear diff rebuilt from a reputable shop (inspected, new bearing kit, etc) and by all accounts it seems they did an excellent job. Just before I put my diff cover on I spun my axels and drive shaft and was wondering if there is supposed to be this amount of play?

Here's a video I just took which helps describes what I'm talking about:

Thanks!

Seems like a lot for a fresh rebuild to me. Since the cover is off I'd see what the gear pattern is and measure the back lash. Both are easy to do and there are pic's of the proper engagement pattern.

That is not backlash. It's normal play. That is the play between the spiders gears and the diffs carrier. Be sure the spiders thrust washers are installed, they can be little tricky to install. If you rotate the carrier so the big window is toward you with the center pin vertical and rotate the pinion to make the noise , you will see the top spider going up and down on the center pin. To witness backlash you need to physically hold the ring gear and slightly turn the pinion back and forth. It will rotate ever so slightly.

Thank you -- I do have the thrust washers installed correctly and backlash was all set appropriately. I also asked our trusted landcruiser shop here in Washington State and they say that is normal 'play'. I think I'm good to go but thought I would post anyway. Learning as I go here...

I'd would check both pattern and lash just so you know.
