Sam -- as for the avatar, there's a 10 post minimum -- or so I've read, before you can get an avatar.

For pics you should be able to follow the instructions in the link that Junk posted.

Check your Options under UserCP.

Click on the UserCP link, then "Edit Options"

You'll see a Messaging and Notifications section. Make sure you have the "enable PM" box checked.
