Over the past month I've seen estimates from $1600.00 to over $3,000.00 to completely rebuild a 2F engine from top to bottom. What is a reasonable cost in your opinion? Keep in mind the estimate should include pulling the engine and putting it back in as well. Mine sounds like it is about to give up the ghost and I'm getting asphixiated every time I drive it - valves I think? Cost to rebuild? Don't want to get raped on it. :D

Are you f***ing kidding me?? 16 people have viewed this post and none of you clowns have any opinion/knowledge to share on this? :flipoff2: I guess everyone must be throwing out the 2F and doing the V8 swap then? :o How about helping me out here before I scrap it and do the same(V8)??

yeah, talk to dd113 (david), he has advertised in the past for doing rebuilds, etc.

Well i'm going to do a detailed post on this later but here's a little info
labor - $1500 - to pull the motor, rebuild it, desmog it, replace all hosts, belts, plug wires, ... etc.
machine shop labor = $400
carb rebuild by Jim C = ~$250
recurve the distributor by Jim C + ~100
parts - probably clos to $1000 -- new pistons, rings, gaskets, ... plus extras like new cam and crank sprokets, a new cam shaft

So you figure about 3000-3500. But truck's running awesome and i've got 4 kids that will be using it over the next 25 years -- i.e. i put the first 200K miles on it now my kids'll put the next.

My friends gave me a hard time about dumping so much into the cruiser but hey i couldn't buy anything like the result for this amount of money.

When I looked at the cost of rebuilding my blown F engine, versus dropping in a low milage Japanese engine from Specter, it was clearly cheaper (and more time efficient) to go with the "new" engine. I still have the old boat anchor where I can rebuild it if I want to.

I am having mine rebuilt right now. it will cost the following:$3073 (includes tax and EPA garbage) for the whole thing. That also includes $45 for the resurfing of the flywheel and putting in the new clutch components. That is with them pulling, rebuilding and putting back in along with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty.

I've just dropped 250 clams getting the head milled and new exhaust valves put in, full rebuild. Add some 100 clams for the head gasket set, which I picked up prior to that. Quote to bore the block $250, crank grind and polish $150, resize rods $15 per. Rebuild kit without cam $600, cam $250. My own labor to remove, disassemble, clean, sort, carry around then reassemble and tune. I think I'm doing it about as cheap as it's possible to do, and still using top quality parts and top notch machine work. And still I'll be over $1600 after it's all done. I think the best deal would be what I saw on ebay last week, where some guy auctioned his rebuilt 2F (low miles since rebuild) and got some $1500 or so...mmmm, somebody correct me on that if you know.

your cost range is about right, especially closer to the $3K plus range if you are going to have someone else pull it and reinstall.....you'll save yourself mucho pennies if you pull it yourself and deliver it to the rebuilder, etc..., etc...

Precision Machine Engines in Inverness Florida pulled, rebuilt, balanced & blueprinted my engine. Cost was $4000 OTD.
That included a Centerforce clutch ($300),flywheel turned, Radiator serviced, new water pump, various switches,etc.etc.etc.
....and believe me,there's ALOT of etc.s

I got about $2,200 in parts and machine work in my 2F in my 77 FJ40, that includes resurfacing the flywheel and clutch, also all the machine work.

Does not include labor, I traded some labor with a friend who did all the rebuild work.

Hope that helps, Matt

Thanks for the info. everyone. Looks like my estimates were in the ballpark then. Looks like the 2F will be getting a rebuild once Uncle Sam forks over repayment of the interest free loan he has had for the last 12 months. :D
