Looking to upgrade the original sponges, I mean shocks, to something a bit more robust.

if I buy OEM replacements, I figure i'm just going to get the same wandering boat characteristics that I have now.
If I buy the coil overs, it's going to lower the car and be a rigid cavity shaker.

Where is the middle ground? Stock height, less bounce and body roll, and something that doesn't bottom out with 4 adults and suitcases in the trunk?

Installation:
anyone done this? is it a total tear down of the rear seat to do the back pair?

Looked at the Quick Struts from Monroe, for the front, looks as if I could save some hassle with these.

When I inquired about it at the stealership, they said 1500 an axle....ouch.

advice?

oh, anyone have a big brake kit?
I know lots of the Camry and Solara parts will work. Again, not looking for tuner parts. it's a Geezer Pleaser after all.

Sounds like the Quick Struts are what you need for the front. In the rear, I would suggest new springs. They are almost 20 years old, and surely sagging a bit. I bet rockauto.com has everything you need for a decent price.

Oem shocks are pretty darn cheap for the rear, and did provide a great ride when new, as the Avalon was Toyota's top end luxury sedan offering apart from any Lexus vehicles.

turns out the shocks were toast. springs are all right. Got some new bushings for the top mounts, made all the difference.
i didnt go tuner route, kept it OEM.
