Looking to install a dual tank Plantdrive SVO system in my HZJ77 and thinking about secondary tank options here in Ontario - near Ottawa. Anybody have any suggestions where to have a tank fab'd in this region? Not too keen to install the Plantdrive poly tank option in the back of the truck. Willing to cut out the rear storage compartment. Any estimates as to the cost to fab and fit an aux tank to a 77?

Wayne, if you're around, where did you have your tank fab's for the Troopie build and could you source/supply one for a 77?

Thanks!

Peter

how bout one out of a 79 series? wouldn't that bolt in?

Just going to pipe-in on two fronts:

1. I am going to be placing an order to Australia for some larger items upcoming. Dates not confirmed yet, and it will be coming is as LTL Container freight. I can take pre-paid orders for larger parts such as extended range fuel tanks.

2. As a guy who runs a repair shop, and who has had to suffer through repairing the damage done by Plant Drive and other Veggie oil and Biodiesel conversions, I have to say that I would absolutely not ever run one of these systems if the examples of what I have seen installed locally is any indication of what is happening elsewhere. I have seen quite a large number of conversions and not a single one has been done in a manner that I would call professionally or properly done.

The damage to the fuel system, the injection pump, and other systems is more expensive to repair than paying full pump price for regular diesel fuel.

Please be very aware of what you are getting in to; the costs of the installation and the costs to repair or replace your injection pump, and other related parts in the fuel system.

Please be totally sure that your "free" fuel is spotlessly clean and incredibly dry. Is properly heated before entering the injection pump etc.

Make totally sure that all of your electrical connections are professionally finished and sealed. That all of your relays and loom are properly secured, and so on.

Use high quality fuel line that is properly made to handle WVO and or biodiesel.

I spent an enormous amount of time working on a Mercedes Benz recently that had a locally installed WVO / Biodiesel system in place. It was a horror show in every respect (as have ALL of the conversions I've worked on - every single one has been so badly installed that I am floored that people actually pay for this crap workmanship). This was supposedly installed by a local Plant Drive dealer / installer.

Note that I am not anti alternative fuels, but I get really tired of mopping up garbage workmanship, rebuilding fuel systems etc. and then handing our client a bill that makes any possible savings in using a bio-fuel a totally moot point.

Ok I looked into a few things awhile back, both WVO conversion and long range tanks.

I found out that a troopy tank would not fit under a 77 because the 77 does not have enough room for the length of the tank. A cross member is in the way.

There can be a long range tank bought out of Australia that is 170-180L in capacity. The new cruisers are coming standard with 130L tanks overseas, well at least in the 76 series. You will need to cut the storage
pocket out in the floor to make them fit. I don't see this being a big deal if the cruiser has drawers in the back, because you wouldn't be able to access anything in it anyways.

Simon Liew did an aux tank for WVO on his old 77. Take a look at this thread.

I am sure something could be made easily, I think it would be a matter on how you have your exhaust routed to give yourself room for a second tank. You could mess around with cardboard and make a rough tank yourself. Take the dimensions to a competent fabricator and pump one out in a few hours.

Make sure if you do a WVO conversion that your fuel is de-watered and clean. Extensive heating and filtration (centrifuging) is best. Water test all of your fuel before putting it in the tank. Also install a water catch in your system with a glass bowl (Not plastic). Make 100% sure that the oil you are putting through your pump and injectors is above 70 Degree Celsius. This is the point where VO is the same viscosity as diesel fuel.

Keep us posted what you do, there aren't too many 77 guys around here. Did your sweet 73 sell?
