Any opinions on what would be considered normal operating temperatures for a Toyota automatic transmission? (City traffic, ambient temps. in the 80-85 degree (F) range)
Thanks

various automatics have always yielded 180-185F range at speed for me, (corolla, taco, sentra etc) I cant see it deviating too much from there. 190 when its hot with AC on, if it starts hitting 200-210 is worry, 220 is fire

Thanks Andrew. I've been seeing 150-180 degrees in city traffic and the temps. didn't change much when I had the transmission flushed recently.

Charles, found this old thread, im sure there are folks smarter than me on this, but i dont agree on temperatures talked in it,

A440F Operating Temp...

Ive been taught that heat kills auto trannys, period, under 200 is the goal. This chart backs up what i believe. Again, there may be folks way smarter than i in this. I subscribe to anything over 220 is an asap fluid change as well.

Thanks Andrew......
The transmission has lasted 27+ years so hopefully it will continue to do so. I wonder how many people actually have mechanical gauges that monitor the tranny temps. vs the dummy light forward of the shifter.

Hello Charles/ @1978HJ45 ,

From the factory manual: 70 - 80 C or 158 - 176 F.

The manual also says that the throttle cable must be inspected after checking oil temperature.

The manual strongly advises not to exceed the specified range.

Close the throttle valve. Measure the distance between the end of the cable boot/jacket and the stopper. It should be less than 1.5 mm / 0.059 in.

Open the throttle valve. Measure again. Distance should be 32 - 34 mm / 1.260 - 1.339 in.

Hope this helps.
