Hi Folks,
I’ve got a 1995 HDJ81 Japanese import VX Ltd (A442F) and I have a torque converter lockout kit from Wholesale automatic transmissions.

The lock out kit has been sitting around for a year, now that I’m locked down with covid19 I’ve got time to install it.
Only problem is for the life of me I can’t find the transmission ecu where I hook up the kit too.
I’ve been in contact with the team at wholesale automatics and they’re out of ideas 😕

has anyone else had trouble finding the 89530-60140 ECU?
I’ve found other mentions in forums about 60090 and 60120 ECUs too but can’t find one of those either.

on the drivers side I have found
Abs 89541-60020
Cruise control 88240-60081
Transmission relay 89531-60010

and on the passenger side
Emission control 89551-60030
DD 88650-60081
No name 88650-60092

and behind the stereo there isn’t any ECU

on the drivers side of the fan unit are
87161-60010 and 063700-2700, but they are probably just relays.

in the centre console/gear stick area I couldn’t find anything of use either.

or is it possible that it doesn’t have a transmission ecu?

cheers
Kieran

im pretty sure that the engine ecu also does the trans control

That is true for the US spec '95 models with the A343F transmission but I suspect the A442F still uses a separate controller like the US '94 models with the A442F. As I recall on my '94 the ECU is actually labeled as a Transmission Relay. I would look at the harness plug pin-outs and compare that to your installation instructions.

Thanks, yea the instruction plug pin patterns don’t line up with anything

I spent a bit of time looking at the bifmark wiring diagrams over a year ago to try and work it out, but I didn’t reach any conclusions.

I think one of the ecu behind the glove box had the right coloured wires going into it that it could matchup with the wholesale automatics instructions, but the plug was miles different. Which might have been when I started reading the wiring manual to see if the wires were limited only to use in transmission circuit.... but I backed off from that idea

cheers

On my LHD US model the Transmission Relay (ECU) was located above and slightly left of the brake pedal.

I think the transmission relay I mentioned earlier is the one for the transfer case 89531-60010?

It shows it on the left kick panel above the abs ecu on the 93-94 Fsm.

For those of you who have found it- was it in a deep recess or relatively easy to find/remove?

I think my next move is either going to be hijacking the main engine ecu cables or removing the entire dashboard.... that might not happen for a while.
I might even try popping into a local transmission specialist who is hopefully going to have a bit more experience with Japanese hdj81s

I had the same issue.
Is your 1995 HDJ81 EGR (2) equipped ?

Hi Glenn,
Yea it had an egr.... it’s blanked off now thankfully but all the electronics are still there.

Were you trying to install a TC Locker?

the Wholesale automatic guys suggested that I either follow the wires back from the Lock up solenoid to the ecu or run a extension wires from the solenoid plug back to the wholesale automatics lockup unit

Cheers
Kieran

So I pulled the dash off and confirm there is no transmission ecu. The green/white stripe wire from the transmission solenoid terminates at the emission ecu with a green/white stripe/red dot(there are also 2 other green/white/red dot wires that also go to the emission ecu)

Lockup Kit Installation for diesel HDJ81 FT with EGR (1995)

My truck is a HDJ81V-RNPGW (# HDJ81 00060,400), with the EGR system. Most 1995 80 series diesels did not come with twin EGR’s and therefore Wholesale Automatics lock-up control instructions are correct.

In my EGR equipped truck the Transmission ECU is contained with the ‘Emission Control’ 1HD-FT-AT module 89551-60030 on the left side behind the glove box (JDM truck).

Unlike most non-EGR 80 series which have two plug-ins, the 'Emission Control’ module 89551-60030 in the EGR models has three (3) plug-ins receptacles: - one 26 pin, one 16 pin and 12 pin.

If you remove the Emission Control module and remove the top metal plate, you will see that the inside terminals are identified with abbreviations.

There are four connections to install the Wholesale Automatics manual lock-up module, as I explain below:

Green/White bypass to SL (Solenoid Lock) (26-pin)

Within the 26-pin receptacle (2x13) on the inside of the Emission Control module, you see the ‘SL’ pin (solenoid lock), with has the green/white wire, which connects to the Emission Control module to the transmission lock-up solenoid.

This is the important green/white wire to tap into and corresponds to the Wholesale Automatics instructions to connect their manual lock-up control kit

Please note there are other green/white wires in the other plug receptacles, one in 12-pin receptacle (6x2) labeled ‘STP’ and one in the 16 pin receptacle (8x2) pin plug labeled ‘E2’ – these are not the right ones.

Ground (Earth) Tap Connection (26-pin)

Within the 26-pin receptacle (2x13) on the inside of the Emission Control module, there are several ground (earth) connections. I used either ‘E01’ or ‘E02’, which correspond to large brown wires on the plug-in side. There are other grounds in the 26-pin plug-in, but I used these two brown wires, because they were large gauge wires.

Switched (ignition) Tap Power Connection (26-pin)

Within the 26-pin plus (2x13), I found the yellow/blue striped wire to be ignition switched power. This yellow/blue striped wire, corresponds to the tab ‘EθR on the receptacle side in the Emission Control module.

Constant Power Tap Connection (12-pin)

I could not find a constant power source within the 26-pin receptacle (2x13) within the Emission Control module. I did find constant power within the 12-pin plug (6x2), which is the black/red stripped wire that connects to the ‘BATT’ pin. I used this one.

My truck has been sitting for 6 months and I have not fielded tested the Lock-Up module. I will be putting it back on the road in the next two weeks.
