I'm new to the toyota world, and am looking to purchase an 88' wagon with an automatic. It's under 200k, and the only thing making me think twice about the purchase is that while test driving the truck, the 4wd indicator light was on, yet the 4wd button wasn't pressed. The truck didn't seem to be engaged, but I didn't lock the hubs to check for sure either. Should this be a worry if I'm to buy, or is it as simple as replacing the switch? Any other issues with the auto I should worry about? Thank you all for your help.

Search for threads regarding Four Wheel Drive Solenoids. Fixable and not really a worry, but the stock replacement part is $$$. There are work arounds though. Others will chime in with good info.

Fixing the solenoid problem should be pretty easy, but make sure it hasn't led to other problems. If the transfer is engaged, and they didn't do anything about it, that might be symptomatic of how the truck was treated overall. All the least, make sure you give the front drive components a good look over for excessive slop or odd noises.
