My truck will not fit in my garage and i have not even added the AO Roof Rack yet. I was bummed as this is snow country and I am not leaving my recently modified very expensive cruiser out in the elements 24/7 ...no way.

Then I had an idea. I could get an Auto Tent / Gragae system. My question is has anyone used these and do they hold-up? Do they handle a snow load? I could get a curved one without a flat roof that might help with snow loads.

I am looking for th ebest quality available. Has anyone tried the Rhino Tents? They look half decent.

I am looking for something that will last, not rust, not get funky or fall apart, and will look good for many years to come.

I don't have any experience with the shelters, but I'm interested to see where this goes. I've seen pictures of LandPimp's trucks in some sort of shelter, so you might try to get his attention.

If money is not an issue what about something like a car port--a concrete slab and a fixed roof. Build it with steel beams so you can mount a hoist. Just a thought.

ok. No I haven't used either of the products mentioned however I seem to recall antfj may have made something similar to house his rig in New England. IIRC he got some flack from some quarters regarding his choices for flooring or some such. For the price, around 1600 once you factor in all bells and whistles patch kits and deelybobs I gotta think that for a few bucks more some carpenter short on work who needs some bucks can build you a nicer looking shed for 2k, maybe a bit more. I have a car port and if money really is no object then there is something to the idea of a garage built on a steel beam frame gives you the world of possibilities. MAybe split the difference, concrete slab, steel frame and then get the carpenter to put a nice shell around it to match the house. My .02 good luck.

I am in the process of purchasing a home. So I am standing outside looking at the place talking to my Realtor. I already decided to buy it ... and my GF says "You know your truck won't fit in the garage don't you"

Well, to make a long story short. She is correct .. and i have not even added the AO Roof Rack yet. I was bummed as this is snow country (Stone Ridge, NY) and I am not leaving my recently modified very expensive cruiser out in the elements 24/7 ...no way.

It'll always look shabby and not hold up to UV, snow and wind for many years. Maybe you can increase the hight of the garage?
good luck,
J

Check local ordinances before you buy most temporary carports be it tarp or steel frame tin roof are not allowed might be ok were you are but drive around the hood see if you see any if not I'm betting they are illegal.

Building a garage is an idea...and it is more the way the home is laid out than anything else that might prevent me from doing this. A lot of thought went in the design of the home and I do not want to screw it up.

However, someone mentioned raising the garage door height in another thread. I like that option.

The current crop of fabrics are good for 20+ years.

Yes, check them.

Also you will likely need more pipe arches than shown in most of the literature to handle the snow load, but that is easy to do. Farmtek has a wide variety of them.

I have one similiar to this Northern Tools

With record snows here in WI this year it has held up well, there is some condensation buildup on the inside but I keep it closed most of the time.

We had a good dump of snow last month since then it has all dissapeared , as I have been driving around I have noticed all the people with these porta garages sitting twisted and collapsed in their driveways from the weight of the snow.
Myself I do have one that has been up for 2 years know but when it snows I go out several times a day and knock off the snow by pushing up on the inside with a broom till all the snow slides off.

I modified my garage door by putting an extra door panel on. I just moved the door header up a foot and re trimmed the top. Instead of a seven panel door now i have 8. the weight doesn't seem to bother the springs, but I looked into getting stronger ones and they are readily available if i needed them. Works perfect and now I can park in the garage with 33s a 2.5" OME and 9" of roof rack.

They're great.... till they're not :grinpimp:

Mine held up for at least 8 years till this happened. My bad, we don't get a lot of snow here. It'd have been fine if I'd knocked the snow off the roof once or twice.
I'll likely put up another one - and watch it a little closer when it snows...

FWIW mine wasn't a Rhino.

I've got 3 cruisers in "Costco" tents. All are less than a year old. One has a bent frame and ripped roof panel. 2 others have ripped out zippers. My cruisers are totally dust covered. WASTE OF MONEY, but solved a short term need.

Look at FarmTech catalog - you'll quickly see that prefabricated shelters - good ones - will be almost, if not more expensive that building your own. Bob

Which Brand/Model do you have?

These are the ones I am looking at.

Shelter King Instant Boat Shelter and Storage Building - 14 x 24 x 10 - EliteDeals.com

This one seems to be better quality however.

Econoline Freestanding Green Storage Building - 20'W x 12'H x 25'L - FarmTek

Building a garage is probably a 10K proposition as far as costs is concerned. I can do that...but it won;t add any value to the home if I decide to sell it. I only waste money and make investments that do not make sense when it comes to Cruisers...not houses..:)

I am curious, did that do any damage to your vehicle?

Both front fenders dented and scraped, rear 1/4s scraped full length, roof dinged and scraped.
It could have been worse... of course, it could have been better too.

Thanks for the info and pic. That makes me think twice about one of these for sure.

Mr Film, Take a look at Northern Tools, they have an alum frame'd and alum covered one that is rated at 90 or so MPH winds, and I forget the lbs/sqin static load. They also have a wooden shed kit that I have used/built a shed from, and I used T-111 siding for the walls. A little bit of math and you can utilize their wood/shed kit for any width you need.
