I'm slowly building up 2 outback tourers as you might call it. My dad's HJ60 Sahara and my very own LJ78. I am interested in fitting auto lockers to both. Both cars will be doing a lot of sand work and I'm not sure how these things go in the stuff. My dad had put a factory LSD in the older rustcruiser and it was like driving on the pavement instead of soft sand. Will the locker provide too much traction and cause the tyres to dig in and bog down? That is my main concern.
ARB airlocker is out of the question as I can't stand that over priced company and the airlocker just doesn't seem to be the go for what I need anyway. I am also thinking of a Detroit TruTrac up the back and auto locker up front. This might be even better in the sand?
Any ideas?

No such thing as too much traction.

There are no downsides to autolockers in sand.

Mark...

I would add a locker, front or rear, and see how it goes.

What kind of tyres do you have?

what Mark said: more wheels rolling in sand = more go, less digging.

If I were building a truck that saw mostly sand, no rocks, I'd use an autolocker in back without hesitation, and maybe in front also.

If all you do is sand, no pavement, you can just weld the rear and call it good.
Many will say that welded rear is ok on pavement, I don't like it.

I do not mind a welded rear on pavement in a Minitruck with a flat bed... But a Cruiser wagon is too heavy for that approach... it pushes and scrubs horribly.
