Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone here has swapped an Intech motor out of an AU Falcon into their 40?

If you're not from AU/NZ (or South Africa) you probably won't know what I'm on about haha, but these 4.0 straight sixes are extremely common and very well renowned over here, with a reputation much like the old 2H's for clocking over 1,000,000km without any major work, if looked after.

Anyone overseas may have heard of our Barra motor, the successor of the Intech, which is a very popular swap into just about anything. I'm more interested in the Intech as it is more simple and arguably more reliable (plus I am not really interested in forced induction).

If anyone here has had any experience with this or knows anything of interest about such a swap, please feel free to chime in!

Cheers

Hey mate

thought about this a little bit to after watching skid factory fit a barra engine to a bedford van.

It surely could be done, looks like it is possible, Dellow conversions sell a bell housing kit.

Add engine mounts, exhaust work, throttle to electric, ECU, EFI pumps etc.

Where abouts in Aus are you based?

Seeing as 250 motors have been swapped in en masse you're good to go. Carbed crossflow's, EFI crossflow's, Barra's, surely it won't take much to slide the 4.0 in?

Thanks for the replies!

I'm located near peanut town (Kingaroy)

Cool so it sounds like it shouldn't require any major work (like seen in that Bedford conversion haha) which is sweet.

She has an old 253 v8 in there at the moment, apparently swapped out because whoever owned it decades ago was having trouble finding enough diesel for the 2H lol.

I'm told these old Holden V8's are supposed to be pretty reliable, but they just cost a fortune to run. This ones running straight LPG and the P.O reckons she used over 20L/100km. It might be worth noting that this 253 (4.2L) could be swapped directly out for a 308 (5.0L) with no modification as they are pretty much identical but still the issue of crap fuel economy and overall inferior motor.

Anyways a N/A Intech should make twice the power and cost less than half to run so that's the main thing haha.

I guess in the long run it would make sense to pair the Intech with a 5-speed so there's that.

So now it's just a matter of locating an Intech to h55f bellhousing, somebody must make them as I just saw this photo on Facebook of an Intech in a 60 series:

Another reason why Intech over Barra is that you can get them (or even a whole AU Falcon) for next to nothing compared to an FG Barra, and I'm keen to keep things relatively low budget. You also get to keep the original accelerator pedal and authentic old school feel of a throttle cable (I can't stand electonic throttles!).

Anyways I will keep my eyes out in case anything comes up second hand and keep you guys posted on what happens.

Oh and here's a pic of my 40!

Cheers for now

nice find! Troop carriers are getting harder to find.

haha thats a shame that the original motor is gone, haha when fuel economy is an issue the answer is always a bigger v8 :\ haha

Yes, the FG Barra motors are not cheap for how many are available.

5 speed into an Fj45 requires new cross members, relocation of the handbrake, lengthened handbrake cable, 60 series rear hubs, shortened and lengthened drive shafts. Almost worth converting to auto, plus 5 speed boxes are getting really hard to find. Seen unknown history ones for 800 but as pricey as 2k.

haha so yeh nothing major like the bedford.

I say, do it! document it! haha

Thanks mate, yes they are getting hard to find and especially at a reasonable price! I have learned my lesson (twice now) never to sell my troopy again!

Yes I would have been more than happy with the old 2H, I had one in my last troopy which was an HJ45 and had no problem at all with it being a little slower etc, it got the job done reliably and economically which is all that matters to me.

Wow that is pricey for a gearbox considering I've seen entire running 60 series Cruisers going for $2K! I'll wait and see if anything comes up second hand for now, I wouldn't really have any problem keeping the 4-speed if a bellhousing to suit comes up.

Cheers for now and I will post back if I find anything!
