I'm thinking about installing an rear Aussie locker on my 1997 FZJ80. What would the average install cost be from a mechanic and What is the difficulty level if I ended up installing it myself?

Thanks

It's cake assuming you have stock gears

me too. i put arb lockers on my christmas list but if i dont get them i plan on buys a aussie locker for the rear. im worried because ive never pulled the rear apart on anything.

i have this on my list to, what if you do not have oem gears? have not seen anything about it mattering in other post.

I installed an Aussie locker in my ff rear axle with out issue. I never did any work on my own vehicles before my 80 so it must be pretty easy. I had stock gears at the time but I'm not sure what difference that makes.

It makes a difference because anything over the stock 4.10 and possibly 4.56, the ring gear gets thicker because the pinion gets smaller, therefor you have to take the ring gear off to take the crosspin out. At that point you need special tools to reset backlash etc...

Well that would make a job pretty much anybody could do much more difficult. I could not have done it on my owne if that was the case. Am I remembering incorrectly or have people shaved the very inside of the ring gear teeth to get around this problem?

I wouldn't pay someone to install it. It would cost too much and take too long. You also need to document the clearances you measure for warranty purposes and I wouldn't trust just anyone to install it properly.

If it's a daily driver make sure you buy a full set of side gear thrust washers before you tear it apart. You never know what was installed from the factory and you may need thicker or thinner washers in order to get the proper clearances. Both rear thirds I've measured had 1.9mm washers and both needed 1.6's on both sides in order to get the clearances in spec. Other than that, as long as you follow the instructions (and have a set of feeler gauges and caliper), it's a simple job.

I live near SOR and was able to get the correct washers from them. You can either buy a whole set.

(these are the sizes and part #'s listed on toyodiy, SOR's prices on each washer was under $6)
41361 WASHER, REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR THRUST, NO.1
41361‑60010 FJ80, FZJ80, T=1.60 2 $26.37
41361‑60020 FJ80, FZJ80, T=1.75 2 $32.74
41361‑60030 FJ80, FZJ80, T=1.90 2 $38.31
41361‑60040 FJ80, FZJ80, T=2.05 2 $41.36

Or you can install the locker and measure everything then buy only the correct washers you need. When I bought mine a month or so ago they were all out on the 2.05's and were getting low on the 1.6's. I called the local Toy dealer and they wanted $12 for each washer and they were all on the east coast, so it would have cost more and taken much longer.

P.S. SOR sells the diff gaskets for less than $10 and the axle gaskets are around $4. Buy new inner axle seals at the same time (about $4 each as well) and change those while you have the axles out. About $25-$30 for 3 gaskets and 2 axle seals.

Good luck (you don't really need it), and enjoy the clicking.

You can I've had to do that while installing 4.88 gears in my friends 8.8, there c-clip axles so you have to take out the crosspin to take out the axles etc... It does feel a bit sketchy doing it though lol

I just installed a Spartan in my rear. I had the gears set up for a semi-float rear originally so the gears were already clearanced for the pin to come out. It is pretty regular on deep gears in c-clip rears.

It is a very simple process, but the chunk is hella heavy, seriously heavy so be sure to have a friend or a jack or something to help get it out. I dropped mine out on my chest while on my creeper and rolled it out. I am running 35s though and anything smaller you will probably need to jack it up in order to have working room.

I have a quick question. I too have a 97 and was thinking about an aussie locker, but heard they will not fit with a LSD carrier. 97s have LSDs right??

I just installed one in my 97 LX450. Was a pretty straight forward install.

I don't think any of the 80s came with lsd's. Either e-lockers or open carrier as far as I know.

My HDJ81 came with a factory rear LSD. Therefore no auto locker available.

My Aussie Locker is about to show up today, and I'm going to have my local Indy shop do the install next week when I'm out of town. I'll take note of the costs.

If yours is a north American vehicle it either came with lockers or an open diff, afaik. Even LX450s came that way. So just buy a locker and toss it in.
