Aussie import reg question

It should be pretty straightforward. They will use the bill of sale to issue a temporary tag, get a level 2 inspection, emissions (or not...the Defender I did this on was 4WD so could not be dyno'd, no argument from the testing station), then rego and title issued by ADOT. I did this through an MVD agent who knew exactly what to do and took care of it in probably 15min total.

I think they'll want to see the import paperwork, but can't remember specifically which form it was. I'll ask my friend who worked the process with me.

Did you have an Australian title for the defender? Thread in the importing section. Where someone in Nevada was having an issue because he did not have a title issued in Australia.

It's a UK import - and while I did have the Department for Transport doco showing the VIN, it wasn't in my name. I can't remember if the MVD agent actually referred to this other than to get the VIN. Pretty sure the bill of sale was enough.

Sorry, off topic for the thread. Do you still have the Defender? I'd love to check it out.

Here is the thread I was talking about. Does Australia issue titles just like the US.
Thought the Defender was a Australian import. But to be honest in Australia thought a LC would have been what your would have brought over.

Bit of a long story, but the Defender isn't a long term thing, more of a collaboration with a friend.

Australia doesn't issue titles - registration is usually proof of ownership.

Eventually, yes, I would like to bring over a cruiser :)

Ben does Australia have something similar to CA that has a non op on non registered vehicles? If not sounds like it was be easy to sell a vehicle and export it with just a bill of sale that doesn't show they actually owned it.

For reference on my 68 when my son destroyed the clutch the insurance expired before the registration. Got a letter from DMV saying my registration was canceled. That was many years ago and sure it been purged from from the system by now. If I didn't have my title it was be a nightmare getting it registered again. Dealt with that on my 79 years ago. Just lately my daughter came across the title for it and returned. Gave to her and her now ex husband back in 2002 and got back a few years later when they divorced. They never transfer the the title and her ex said it was "lost".

To be honest, I'm not sure, but it may depend on what the customs broker considers valid for proof of ownership. Technically, registration is not - you should have an invoice from when the vehicle was purchased and would use this.
