I am interested in getting a set of new AT tires on my stock 20" LX wheels. 275/55 R20 is the size I am considering as there are more selection than the OEM 285/50 R20. I have narrowed it down to a few listed below. I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina so the weather is a mixed bag of sun, rain and occasional snow and ice. I would appreciate any advice on tire selection.

1. BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2
2.Toyo Open country A/T III
3.Falken Wildpeak A/T3W
4.Nitto Terra Grappler G2

5. Any others I should consider?

Thanks in advance for your input!

I've had all of those recently, and like the Toyos best. They're also likely the lightest (check this), which should be considered your most important metric.

Since you're running 20s though, I assume you don't do much off-roading. If any of the above are available in P-Metric, rather than LT, go that direction to save weight.

Agreed with WesSiler. The Toyo's are a brand new design with new technology just released in early 2020. It's been benched against its competitive set and is an excellent well rounded tire. I hold the Falkens in high regards also.

As you mention "rain and occasional snow and ice", there would be a couple tires I'd scratch off the list as they are not well suited. Some being almost a decade old in design.

#2 and #3 are well suited for your mixed use.

#1 is just okay in cold and snow. Nor is it great in NVH from my experience. But perhaps has incremental advantages in aggressive off-road use.

#4 is a really really old design and doesn't excel anywhere against its newer competition. Pretty bad in snow and cold in my experience as the compound is too hard for it.

Thanks for the input. Our off-roading is typically limited to gravel fire access roads while mountain biking and camping in the region. The Toyo is 44lbs and the Falken in 49 lbs. I’ll put the Toyo to the top of my list.

I was close to getting the Falkens myself, then got a little skittish due to their weight. Ultimately went with the lighter Toyos and have been very happy with them so far. My planned use is very similar to yours OP.

Best time to buy tires is around the Thanksgiving holiday . If you can wait you may save you a few bucks.

I have 275/60/r20’s in BFG and I really like em. True 33’s and they ride wonderfully.

Here's a similar thread....

285/55R20’s here on my ‘14 LX. MICHELIN AT2. Love ‘em. Good mileage, good to great in water and competent in snow. Hauled my 25’ trailer to the Arctic circle twice and around BC with no problems.

I have BFG's on my 200 and wish I didnt.....They look great, have great side walls, and are great for towing, but they destroyed my fuel economy (which was terrible already). I easily lost 2mpg on the highway and in city driving. Pretty sure every time I start it now a polar bear dies.

They also aren't terribly quiet and don't really excel at anything. I have duratracs on my 80 and they are great. Ride just as good as the BFG's and are just as quiet. They didn't affect fuel economy that bad either, but I don't think you can really compare here as they are 2 completely different trucks.

If flashy looks and off-road not your thing, and you just want an all-arounder, then i would recommend Michelin Defender 285/50/20 XL. It is XL rated to carry the heavy Lexus LX. XL rated means that the tread has been reinforced...so, a slightly tougher tire than non-XL. And the best part is that it weighs only 39 lbs per tire.

What size is your BFG KO2?

I have had both General Grabber ATX and Nokian Rotiva AT Plus. Living in Colorado I wanted an all terrain that had great snow handling. Both of these have been great.

One more for Cooper. I got the 295’s tho.

I just replaced mine with 95,000 on them. I really debated switching to something else but just couldn't after getting that kind of mileage out of them. Michelin makes a great tire.
