They say they are 10m radios. But they look to me like CBs on steroids

I thought they were illegal and the FCC was after the people who sold them.
What do other HAMs think?

There is a 10 meter Ham band: 28.0 - 29.7 mHz. Why would they be illegal?

If you modify them to go onto CB band, which is 11 meter, then they are illegal, most likely due to more power than 5 watts and a VFO, instead of fixed freq's. for the individual CB channels.

Jim,

Agreed. But those so called 10m radios have channels like a CB, not a frequency tuner. Most of them than the 5W max CB units should have. They look like CB radios, but they are sold as HAM radios.

I think you are right, Alvaro. Seems to be a gray-market way for a CB-er to get a high-power radio for CB band. What Ham would want a Roger Beep and Echo control? Sounds kinda trashy to me too, after reading the descriptions.

They look cheap when compared to a bonefide Amateur rig.

100 watts is legal on 10 Meters. My guess is these radios are an easy way for CB'ers to operate on 11 meters running illegal power.

Check mods.dk and see if they list a mod to operate on 11 meters.

Running illegal power on any band is considered jamming and I think the fine is $10,000.
There are people in Alaska who openly brag about running illegal power.

Alvaro,

What makes you say these things look like CB radios? I think any HAM would be proud to have this in his shack and it is already set for 'channel 19' whatever that means. :D

Breaker 1-9 good buddy, who is Alvara? Is it the Spanish Elvira? Maybe it's Alvaro's sister from another mother?

With that confederate flag on the radio face to appeal to the good old boy in all of us, it sure ain't no 10m radio. I'll bet there is an easy mod inside that converts it to and illegal high powered Criminal Band radio.

Why do some people on the bands feel the law does not apply to them?

Alvaro, You are correct, those are CB radios that have been modified to increase the power to illegal levels. I am surprised they would advertise them online but I guess they know the FCC has better things to do like fine people for cursing on TV and radio. I have an old stereo receiver that picks up truckers on I95 who use them. :ban:

People that run illegal power on 11 meters are selfish idiots who do not realise their spurious signal propagate worl wide and get into all kinds of equipment.

Do you ever get on low bands? Ever try to work weak station DX, legally? I doubt it. If you did you would understand my passion and why I post as I do. Most 11 meter linears are spurious and splatter all over the band. Below and above the so called "channel" they "think" they are operating on. In short they are band hogs with lousy s***ty signals. Those of us who operate legally with legal equiupment loathe those that operate outside the legal bounds.

There is a reason the FCC has limited the power allowed on 11 meters.

Plus most 11 meter linears made are cheap and crude and they emit spureous radiation, known to you cb'ers as splatter. It is a real and frustrating daily occurance. Your short sighted acceptance of of persons written admission of an illegal activity only demonstrates your selfishness. Do you think the band belongs to you? Oh I forgot you have Alligator syndrome, all mouth and no ears.

I could make a 4 wheel analogy but I doubt you would understand.
Like on the Rubicon, you are required to wheel within the center line of the road, otherwise you'll get a ticket. You and your 11 meter jammers are outside the trail and may cause the trail/band to be closed

Seems really simple to me.

You obey the FCC law or not.

What do you and your friends choose to do?

The laws apply to everyone. I do not choose to pick and choose those that I feel like obeying.

The gray market response is right. These "export" radios are easy to mod to 11 meters. Then they have the higher output to drive the big amplifiers guys are selling.

I was at a truck stop today on I-5 on my way to LA and they had these radios there.
There was no one behind the counter. I wanted to ask some questions... Like "How much power?, Does it transmit on the CB band?, Is a license required?"

Maybe on the way back

Regards

Alvaro
