Had slight damage to front bumper ($200). Is the non-winch ARB bumper worth the cost? Also, is it easy to install? Where is the best place to purchase?

Thanks

As far as I can tell, the non-winch is the same as winch without the ears for the fairlead.

Search ARB in the 80 series forums. There are several accident result reports with and without one.

It is a cake walk to install if you have 2 people. With 1 it can be done, but the thing is about 110 lbs of ungainly 6' long unbalanced steel to put on with 1/16" tolerances. Add another 100 lbs if you have a winch mounted in it already.

Check the vendors section. There are at least 3 places (probably more) there that will sell these from there. You can also check www.ARBUSA.com or just use Google.

YMMV.

I'm 5'8" and weigh 154pds. I put my ARB on in my driveway, by myself. Took me all of 1 hour total to rip off the old one (I do mean rip the s*** out of it) and bolt in the ARB (6 bolts, IIRC)?

I did 2 this past summer. If it takes you an hour, then you're keeping one hand behind your back. The old comes off in about 10 minutes. The new goes on in about 20. Add 10 minutes to read the instructions and lay the fasteners and washers out in an orderly fashion. One person can easily lift it and insert it onto the frame tips where it will sit firmly enough to drive around with no bolts. Piece o' cake and after you do it you'll laugh at yourself that you ever posted any concerns over install.

Blythg,

I consider myself all thumbs, i.e. very little mechanical skill-I was able to install my ARB in one hour and fifteen minutes. You wont need photos.

Just remember to not fully tighten any of the bolts until you get them all threaded..ie give you wiggle room to get all of them in.

Thanks to all of you. I'll do it myself. Now to find a good price...

Does enybody in here have pictures of an ARB bumper installation?

Thanks,
Allan

Allan,
Like the others said, you shouldn't need pictures unless you are completely clueless on which end of a wrench to use. The only tip that you should need is that some have found the frame horns a little to "wide", meaning the ARB mount points didn't slide easily over the ends of the frame horns. If this is the case with yours, you can use a BFH or the more elegant approach is to use a ratchet strap around the frame horns to "cinch them together".

Geez, I must be really slow. I know I spent at least 2-3 hours doing mine. It did have the winch already in it, so figure a bit more weight (I think I included the time to install the winch in the bumper in my 2-3 hours).

I know I also spent an inordinant amount of time looking at the photos and laying out all the hardware.

Oh yeah, I also had several  during that time - I guess that could slow me down some.;)

Have at it!

Another for Kurt at CruiserOutfitters. Got both bars from him, plus excellent service and a great attitude.

I'm no whiz or anything but it took me about 15 minutes to install the used one I bought..I already had the factory bumper off and had the help of the guy I bought it from tho....

X3...

So far from him:

3 suspension systems (with lots of good input from Kurt)

1 Engel fridge + all the goodies

Few other things, I cannot remember.

Great guy, great help!

Was easy to install, but the tolerances are very exact, somewhat hard to get it started. You definately need two people, unless you have super strength with great balance and a third arm (like a 50's science fiction radiated octopus).

I just did ARB/winch bar.

Two people does help lift & align.

I could not get to much inward movement with a ratchet strap on the frame horns, but I did use and old bottle jack from the FJ40 and a few scrap 4x4's & 2x4's for spacers, and the jack very nicely expanded the ARB receptors.

I spent more time monkeying around with wiring up the indicator lights than bolting on the bumper
