My brother-in-law is thinking about buying a UZJ100. Can anybody point out things to look for when shopping for one? I've read Slee's guide. He won't be wheeling it. He wants something reliable to cart his three kids around. He had a Sequoia, but it was a POS. I'm trying to get him back into a Toyota.
Check cv boots for leaks. Make sure brakes are smooth. Make sure PM has been kept up with. Other than that give it the regular used car check. Pretty simple with 100s.
98-99 rear locker, but fragile front
00-01 attack and VSC, but weak tranny
02 same as 00-01 without trannyissue
03 5spd tranny, minor power increase. Cosmetics
04 no major changes
05 18" wheels are standard. Important for 35s
06 variable tmining
All that said, I think 03 and 06 are the preferred years for mechanicals. Also, I prefer Lexus leather, since it seems to hold up much better. I cannot recommend the adjustable height. I had LX buyers lined up to buy my coils and torsion bars due to bad hydraulics
I'd suggest looking at maintenance records. ABS, Trannies and adj height hydraulics are non wear components that are big ticket fixes. Other than that, the 100 series is fairly bullet proof.
Thanks. He's looking to pay less than 13K, preferably around 10K. That puts him in the earlier models. He's looking to get out of a car payment. He has scoured cars.com, autotrader, and CL and found a few with less than 130,000 miles.
So far so good. I'm hesitant to say it is better - just different. I haven't tried uploading a picture yet - with the old forum software, I thought that was pretty primitive compared to other forums I'm on.
