When: Saturday Oct. 6th & 7th.
What: Anza Borrego trail runs
Saturday Run: Trail Run Thru Canyon Sin Nombre, Fish Creek (Diablo Drop Off) to Sandstone Canyon and Wind Caves hike (very nice camping site)...Sunday Run: More of Lower Coyote Creek, Sheep Canyon exploring….
Who: A buddy and his lanky German Shepperd in his V8 Touareg and myself...
Memorable moments: Going Down, then back up Diablo Drop off, Canyon Sin Nombre Caves, Wind Caves (great camping spot) and the water crossing on Lower Coyote Canyon...... I am guessing about 33-35" of dept at the deepest point. Nice! Also, nice were our modified SS sprayers turned camp showers….it is nice to take warm showers on a cool evening after a long day of driving. Besides a slashed sidewall on one of the Touareg’s 31” BFG AT tires, and all 4 of it’s 18” rims scratched noticeably, thanks to Lower Coyote Canyon’s Rock Garden, there were was no damage on either vehicles. The Touareg lacks articulation sure, but it is no wannabe off road SUV, thanks to it’s adjustable suspension settings and other technology features, it has surprising off road ability for a luxury suv. It was nice to see the driver drive it like he stole it.
In comparison, my unlocked 80, went up Diablo Drop off effortlessly (we did the hill a couple of times), it almost felt too easy compared to how much faster the Touareg had to take the hill and seeing more tires on the egg go up on the air during the attempts….
We made camp at Sheep Canyon, there were 2 other vehicles at the camp site, it was nice. On Sunday we continued to explore other canyons in the area...beautiful area no doubt about it. The nice part is the beginning of Lower Coyote Canyon Trail is only 65 miles from my house…..
I can wait to go back and run the Canyon Sin Nombre to Fish Creek Trail backwards, and ascend the trail from the beginning….and of course run Lower Coyote Creek Canyon again…that trail is a blast with it’s rock garden and water crossings…closest to exotic as we are going to get here in So Cal….
