Does anyone want to go anywhere today? Coke Ovens not an option.

Richard,

Sorry I missed your post. I spent the day out at 4Peaks road scouting for the trail cleanup. I wished I'd have looked here before going out. Good to see that you're getting back out again after your adventure. Just keep watching here and posting up when you're planning to head out. You can usually catch one or two people who wan to wheel if you give us a day or two heads up before hand.

You should come out to the Sonic meet this friday. It'd be good to see ya again.

Richard:

Would you care to explain to another rookie about "Coke Ovens"? what is wrong with it?

He was referring to the Cochran Coke Ovens Trail outside of Florence. It leads to five charcoal kilns that were built in the late 1800s to turn mesquite into charcoal to smelt the ore from the mines near Cochran. They are domed structures about 12' in diameter and 20' tall.

It is a fun trail - I did it yesterday. It is accessed from Box Canyon Trail/Martinez Mine Trail or from BattleaxeTrail.

I thought that trail had been closed. The owners of the land closed it. Did you see any signs?

No closure signs or gates. I had not realized the Country Thunder music festival was this past weekend - it is held on Price Road, which is the access to Box Canyon. There were hundreds, if not a 1,000, RVs there and I think half of them had quads. There was a Jeep club that went to the Ovens as well.

while the trail is not "closed" by sign or gate. the owner of thr property has publically asked that the property not be visited. as a club we decided that we will not visit the coke ovens as the owner has requested. we also do our best to explain the situation to others who might be trespassing on the property.

I thought the trail was open, but the request was that the property and Coke Ovens themselves not be accessed due to trash and vandalism of the site:mad:. Just trying to be clear, but I thought you could get within visual distance of the structures. I've never run the trail intentionally (I got lost an went part way down it once:rolleyes: - big suprise).

Yeah. Most of the trail is on public land. There's a gate about 1/4 mile from the ovens themselves. I was under the impression that that was the property boundary.
And yeah, last time I was there, the place was fairly trashed. That was the cleanup we did there.
If it was my property, I'd close it too.

View of the Coke Ovens. The windows were added in the 90s when the ovens were converted into little cottages.
low res coek ovens.webp

Pretty sure the "windows" at the upper level were there back in the 70's. I'll have to pull up the OLD pics I have from when I was a kid.

I stand corrected. The Backcountry Adventures Arizona book states it was in the 80s that the owner converted them to cottages by adding windows, leak-proofing the roofs, and pouring concrete on the floors. Cool concept, but probably way too remote to attract many customers.

Tricali, I enjoyed drive to ovens, just not the battleaxe trail. Got stuck. But found out that the members of this club will come andsave your ass if it needs saving. Great group of people.

Thanks! is good to know some limits because for now my FJ60 is all stock, saggy springs and tires smaller than 31.

So far I have done only the Bulldog Canyon trail from Blue Point entrance to Wolverine, everybody else was going to other way though. The FJ60 took a good beating but I made it without a problem other than the chunks of tire I left on the trail. I'm new in all this 4x4 stuff and I was impressed with the performance of the FJ60 , it may have something to do with the new IH8MUD.COM sticker I put in my winshield which has been the mayor upgrade so far.
