Me, the wife and some friends are headed to Hilton Head next Sunday for a week or so and while the girls are laying on the beach, me and my buddy would like to get out and explore. I'll be driving my 1999 100 Series with a lift, front and rear lockers, winch, and 35" tires but I don't have a clue where to go or if there's anyplace to ride close by. I got online looking around but didn't really see anything and from what I can see, I better stay off the beaches or I may be paying a big fine. I probably need to stay within 30 to 45 minutes of Hilton Head so I don't tick the wife off too bad. I hate the beach so I'm hoping to find something to do besides set at a bar all day. I tried to talk her into a trip to Boone and Blowing Rock, NC but the girls want to go to the beach. She never complains about me taking off on the weekends to ride so I better keep her happy. Thanks for your help.............John

You will be in 2H for the weekend.... Unless you want to play in a DHEC & OCRM managed, ACOE regulated tidal wetland.

THere are some pretty county roads that will let you see some marsh views, but the best views will be of your wife (compliment, not smart ass comment). You can head into Beaufort and visit Hunting Island and the lighthouse, but it's all gravel road. You can drive upto Charleston, but that's a day trip - and the girls are sure to want to come with you.

What about Pinckney Island, any place to ride in that area? Do you have to buy permits to ride? I know here in Tennessee you have to buy permits to ride on state wildlife management areas. I would love to find some places to take a ferry and just see some pretty country, I don't have to do any extreme wheelin.

We've been married 20 years, I've seen her in a bathing suite, I want to get out and about. I hate touristy crap, I guess living within 30 miles of Gatlinburg does that to a person. I'm going to give her 5 days, I need one to myself. My buddy and his wife aren't getting along real well so I'm sure a day on the back roads would do him some good.

Thanks for the help, very much appreciated

Congrats on 20 years ! There are some desolate stretches of beaches - but none with vehicle access that I know of. I don't know anything about PIckney Island.

There are plenty of 2 lane roads thru the woods and swamps of the Ace Basin area, but I can't think of any wheelable locations. Search out any of the old plantations, public boat landings, or diners. There just is not much available óff road - you are in the Low Country, and with all of the rain we just had from this weekend's storm - the swamps will be deep, and mosquitos thick.

Good luck on the back roads !

Thank you sir, I got a good one and it's been a short 20 years. She actually likes to ride about as much as I do, I will probably have a hard time getting away for the day with my friend if she thinks there's a chance we'll get off the asphalt. Thanks for the help, maybe we'll discover some good spots to ride.

If anyone thinks of some good places to check out, please let me know. I'll be happy just to get out and find some good BBQ away from HH.
