I have a 2001 LX 470 with a factory tow package; *but* 4-pin harness only at the rear (why Toyota rated a vehicle for 6500 lbs towing capacity but did not wire for trailer brakes is beyond be. But live and learn on later models I suppose...)

So I have everything I need to hardwire up a 7-pin harness with an aftermarket Tekonsha electric trailer brake controller, but before I start cutting wires I am wondering if anyone has a good idea where to tap into the vehicle brake electricals to get a (stop) signal for the brake controller.

Basically, the brake controller needs an input signal to tell it that you are stepping on the brake. On a Tekonsha brake controller, for example, it is the Red wire input to the brake controller.

Now some vehicles have a pre-wired plug for this (2003-later LXs do for a full 7-pin connector, apparently), some have a little wire pigtail hidden away under the dash or near the master cylinder, some require you to locate the cold-side of the brake pedal switch and splice into the wire directly (yuk)...

From what I have found about this year if vehicle, there is a control module near the rear of the vehicle that converts the appropriate outputs from the vehicles wiring harness to the 4-pin trailer plug, but it would be much handier to find a splice point or similar somewhere closer to the front of the vehicle where I will be mounting the brake controller itself.

So if anyone here has a hard-wired aftermarket 7-pin brake harness with electric brake controller on their early vintage 100-series, I would love to know where you found the brake signal wire.

Thanks!
