My HZJ73 with A440 auto is pumping ATF into the transfer case at a very slow rate - I've added 1 litre to the tranny over the past year, and it's all ended up in the transfer-case.

I'm wondering if it is easier to pull the transfer and intermediate housing, with the transmission in the vehicle, rather than pulling the whole works as a unit.

Any experience either way?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

RE:seal

l have done bothways, pulling the bulky and heavy tranny and transfer is big job,if you have a hoist,it is easier to just stand under the truck and just take the rear half of the transfercase and drop all the gears and you can change the seal,if you don't have a hoist, still easier just to split the transfercase than dropping the tranny.make sure you don't loosen all the bolts on the fronthalf of the transfercase, otherwise you may have to reseal between the frontcase and the tranny.
most of the ones l did were 5 speed, not sure the auto is the same, memory not too good at 40 something.

Just bare in mind the seal is usually inserted from the front of the transfer case, the case has a radius leadin for the seal, but no lead in on the T/C inner side face, if you press the seal from the inside then USE a tube inserting tool. The tube is just long enough so you can use the shaft nut to press the seal in. This keeps the seal true and helps to stop the seal from shaveing on the sharp edge of the case while being inserted. Be carefull when prising out the seal that you do not bruse the houseing.

Looking at the FSM I downloaded, in it's exploded views, it shows that the A440F only has an o-ring on the tranny output shaft, but the A440L has a proper seal.. curious to find what is really in there...

And Simon, I hear you regarding the memory thing (just barely  (pun intended)) , but don't worry, it continues to get worse.. Are you wearing bifocals yet?

But these little problems we are all challenged with sure beat the alternative! (NOT getting any older!)

Looking thru Toyodiy.com site the seal is Part number 90316-48003
The seal stops the auto oil from entering the T/C, the "O" Ring stops oil from traveling along the input shaft splines and the T/C input gear.

Hi Jim,
l needed reading glasses couple of years ago.
also don't forget to check the breather cap on top of the transfercase, make sure it is not plugged.
Where about are you in north Okanagon?
l am driving to Alaska in july, may pass by the Okanagon on the way back to Winnipeg.

We're just a couple of km off of the highway, on the east side of Salmon Arm.
