I am considering bringing my RC51 out to Yellowstone for the summer but don't want to pull a trailer 2000 miles. Has anyone used any of those hitch mounted motorcycle carriers? The bike weighs around 450lbs and i would be using the factory hitch on a FZJ80. I have not looked to see what size the hitch is so this all might be for nothing.

possible issues: the hitch is only rated at 500lbs vertical; the carrier is less than that (very common); the bike ends up somewhat wobbly on there as it's hard to secure it tightly with the suspension involved; you need extra space if you have a rear spare tire and you need a (solid bar) extension but that's even wobblier; a lot of the inexpensive ones are really not sturdy at all;

and overall, it's pretty scary to use.

I have a good sturdy one and I've never used it on a public road...

Late to the party, but I hauled a KLX300 on our 7800 mile trip this summer. We were also loaded down with RTT, fridge, and gear for two months of camping. Granted, my bike only weighs about 260lbs, but it worked great with no issues.

I have used mine on the interstate a lot. Of course my MX bike only weights around 220lbs with fuel.
