I'm expanding my recovery kit to cover myself against more scenarios when traveling solo in various terrain.

I have a front winch but am considering adding the Bush Winch to my kit to 1) provide a rear-pull option without relying on numerous pulley blocks and anchor points to reverse the pull direction of the front winch, and 2) serve as a non-electric backup to the front winch in the event of power issues in a watery situation.

Anyone try the Bush Winch? It's here: Bush Winch » Self Recovery Systems | Outback Driving - https://www.bushwinch.com/. They even have an anchor that can be attached to another hub to help spool the rope. Seems pretty neat.

Seems a bit gimmiky to me..

From the product itself, I don't know if I want a single front wheel pulling all the weight of a heavy stuck vehicle.. Open diff won't help it either. Also, can't steer out of harms way or another hole.

For deep sand, a good tire deflator, kinetic rope + shovel and air compressor will get you out of almost anything.

They provide two wheel winches in the set. So you can winch from any two wheels at the same time if you want. You can also steer by using the rope guides on the front wheels: .

I’ve got a more power puller for rear or side recoveries. Highly recommended. A hilift with a winch attachment would be helpful as well. The wheel winch thing only works forward and backward…hilifts and more power pullers work in any direction as well as on logs and boulders.

I carried a pair of Bog Out for the last three years, never used them except to try them out.
Similar idea but wraps the tire itself.
Available on amazon or from the nice family business in Australia

That's pretty cool. Makes me a little nervous though, with my tight clearances around my wheels.

easy to test. Just tie a piece of webbing thru your rim and around tire and see if it catches on the caliper.

I used these to self rescue on a Helix when I was in NZ years ago. They work surprisingly well, and are highly regarded in the Southern Hemisphere. I have a set for my LX that I have never needed.

I was going to post them as a better option then the OP, you beat me to it.

Looking at the videos, my impression is that the Bog Out requires level terrain, a straight path, and extra careful eyes. The Bush Winch, if used with the rope guides on the other wheels, can let you get out of more terrain, go in a curved path and steer, and keeps the rope away from steering components. It also is a quick release system that keeps hands and arms a little bit further away from tire and Earth.

There's a similar apparatus for BMW GSA bikes. I've seen one in use in person and it's effective. Not sure how effective it would be on a vehicle as there are a lot of other forces and dynamics at play.
