Anyone replaced the silicone in their blue fan clutch? If so, which silicone viscosity did you use?

I read about it, and decided it was much easier to buy the Landtank modded clutch with the heavier oil and tuned thermometer. It worked great. Mark may have it, but it is probably on his 80 now.

I looked on AJIK Overland Exchange at the LandTank Aisin Clutch...I'm tempted to give it a go, but it's kinda ridiculous- they're asking $278 for the "modified" clutch with 15cst oil and an adjustment made to the clutch itself...hard to really go with this option when a brand new Aisin clutch is around $75 and 20cst silicone is like $6 on amazon for 2x the amount needed to do a service...am I missing something- that's like a 200% mark up?

I would probably go the Amazon route.

A few years ago I was studying this and remember a thread about a certain style of fan clutch that is needed for the mod. Not necessarily blue, but some sort of difference in the casting itself. Maybe you've seen that as well since you've been searching?

Thanks Mark- I was thinking of doing the super cheapo route...i.e. take the current one off, drain it and fill it back up...lol

Dang. I think it was around $175 shipped when I bought mine. The adjustment is they somehow "clock" the thermometer to start engaging earlier and more accurately than stock. I would say dump yours and fill with new. I will see if I still have my old one and you can have it to practice on.

my bad...sorry guys...$235 shipped without hardware...$247 with new hardware...some reason $278 was in my head...

Thanks Jay- That's mighty kind of ya, but probably not necessary...I think I'm just gonna take the current one off on a Friday night, heat it in the oven for a little while, let it drain till Sunday, fill it up and pop the same one back in...

Thanks Mark

Ok...so first attempt- FAIL...broke off two of the studs that hold the actual fan to the fan clutch...ordered a replacement from Amazon (it's funny- the toyota dealer acted like the part was pure unobtanium when I called to see how much from them)...lol...

I guess Mark and Jay were spot on about having a spare on site in case you "muck something up"...I'm pretty good at mucking stuff up on the first attempt it seems...:bang:

The only silver lining in the whole thing is that I went to Ace hardware to get a set of metric craftsman box end crescent wrenches- that was a win for sure...as I was looking over the sets, one of the hardware store staff pointed out a set that was normally $79 bucks- they had it on sale for $14.99 (I bought 2 immediately ;)).

Bought the replacement off amazon on wednesday and filled it up with 20k fluid...too soon to say effect on temps...thanks for the offer Justin...I've got a spare broken one if anyone wants it lol...:bang:

well...just driving around town, can't really say I'm noticing any real change in temps...was hopeful, but I guess at least I know the clutch is good...:meh:

just did this on a FJ80 customer's truck...was easy, and I went with 10k fluid mixed with 7k fluid 50/50. The hardest part was getting it to pop apart. After that a couple of pyrex pans to drain the fluid over about 24 hrs and your are ready to reassemble.

Thanks Bobby...I can't say that it's improved anything temp wise...still think a new radiator is probably in my near future...maybe Christmas time (hint hint...lol)

well when i drained the original fluid it was almost syrupy...the new fluid was so viscous it took forever for me to squeeze it out...and they offer up to like 30k fluid.

I didnt notice a change in the static load of the clutch myself but as thick as that fluid was it has to be working better than it was previously..
