So the other day in stop and go traffic I heard a bang(crash) then brakes squealing then I got rear ended. New BMW X5 rear ends Ford Focus who then rear ends me. I was stopped. Focus was maybe going 5-10MPH.

Curious to know - I wasn't worried about damage until I just looked. I looked under the car , all seems well. I was not worried about hitch cover - the backside of it is busted. Also not concerned about the scrape by the rear light area. But, the spider crack I wouldn't want to get worse - then paint chipping, etc....

I really don't want anyone shop touching this and taking off/replacing the bumper. There is an impression by the spider crack.

Thoughts ? Will the spider cracking get worse?? tks for the input.

That trailer hitch cover is about $50 to buy and $50 to paint.

The crack probably won't travel.

The bumper skin comes off in like 15 minutes, and a decent body shop should be able to do a replacement easily. I'd be more worried if they try to do much paint blending on side panels.

If it is only the hitch cover you're worried about it is easy to replace. I think they even come painted from Toyota.

But, if that is cracked, I'd be a little surprised if there isn't damage to the black plastic piece it mounts into. Might be worth double checking.

Get their insurance to fix it, take the proceeds and order a slee bumper.

Can you explain "bumper skin" ?

Im more worried about the spider crack spreading then the paint peeling, etc., over time. I really don't want anyone messing with it. Ive never found a good shop here and always have more trouble afterwards.

There are some support rails that are on the back side of the hitch cover - one of them is bent - no biggie. The black framing piece under the the hitch cover is ok. The main point of impact seemed to be a dead on center hit on the hitch cover besides the impact where the spider crack is. There is actually some lasting indentation around the spider crack

The part of the body that extends below the rear cargo doors and wraps around to the rear wheel wells. It is just a relatively thin piece of flexible plastic. Purely cosmetic, and not really providing any protection. It pops right off. The real structure underneath is a rear crossmember, welded into the frame with an integral trailer hitch. For comparison, look at an 80'series for an example of where there is a metal external bumper attached to the frame with shock like mounts.

~4-5 years ago my LX was backed into our old e320. Caved in the entire corner. I took the bumper off, pushed it back out, been the same ever since. You’ll be fine.

tks for the hitch cover offer. keep ya posted. but im not worried about mine , just wondering on the crack in the bumper. seems like its gonna be nothing to worry about getting bigger. I was thrown by "bumper skin".... Seemed like it meant wrap or something. I was like, huh? haha. tks

Bumper cover is another term for the same thing, if bumper skin doesn't work for you.

If you need one, I have a blizzard pearl hitch cover off of a ‘13 LC collecting dust in my garage.
I could use that cover? I have a 2015, Blizzard Pearl my cover is trashed.

I had great luck when I needed something painted for my Silver 4 Runner a while back. I took the parts to the local Lexus dealer, price was probably 15% more than it should have been but the match and the paint job were both flawless.

Since you were rear-ended it's likely the other drivers fault .. so why bother with all of this?

You can get the other drivers insurance to pay to get it fixed at a top quality shop (any shop of your choice) .. or get the estimate and then the $$ and fix it yourself.
They will also pay for a 4x4 rental or equivalent rental while it being repaired. This is usually included in the settlement amount.

Maybe to not get a black mark on your CarFax for a totally minor incident.

It's possible both drivers are related.

very minor damage and I really would blow my top at the inconvenience. people down here got no respect for anything - heck last time we had a little work done on the wife's Audi (at the dealer), we got a speeding ticket in the mail a few weeks later - damn mechanic took the car home "to test it out". Sketchy part of town too. PIA that one was.... Body shops unfortunately, bad luck there.... Got charged 1200.00 for a recalibration of the lane departure, etc., and ended up they didn't even do it. Had to take it to the dealer and have them mess with it.

Anyhow, with our luck, as mentioned we'd probably get something on our insurance record or carfax (might still anyway) even though I was the lead car.

You won’t on insurance and Car Fax ‘may’ show ‘minor impact’.
Get an estimate at a good body shop.

Last time we got rear ended I just went and got a estimate from a large reputable shop emailed it to the other guys insurance company .. they dropped by to take a look at it, cut me a check and we were done.
Wasn't on my LC200 .. but same situation.
The skin and paint were a bit of coin so I just got a new after market bumper and put it on.

You guys are reminding me why I've been running a hitch on my 4Runner for 19 years and need to put one on the 200. It works great as a battering ram when someone rear ends you at a light or on I-5 in stop and go traffic. It does wonders...pops a hole in the offenders radiator, and no insurance claim required.

If you are worried about a carfax note about a minor impact, think how worried a prospective buyer would be of a unrepaired minor impact. If you don’t ever plan to sell, the point is moot anyways.

My vote is get a quote, a check, and then put your order in at Dissent.
