Anyone parting out a 62 (or late 60) locally?

I need a new speedo cable ASAP. Not sure if I can use a late 60's cable or not, but if I can get one quick it's worth a try.

Anyone? Beuller?

you're welcome to the one in the '85, but like you said it may not work with your 62. It's at Aron's... grab it now if you like. If it doesn't work you can just throw it in the back.

I found out the late 60 cables are 6" too short to work in my 62. Depending on my tax return (and how long I can let my 62 go without a speedo) I'm thinking I'll go ahead and dive in on an electric speedo conversion. If I can get a 5" Autometer speedo to fit, it looks like Marlin sells a sender that not only outputs the correct signal to run the speedo (will still require calibration of course), but screws right into the speedo connection on our tcases.

There will, of course, be a thread in 60's Tech if I go through with it :D

I know your more resourceful and mechanically savvy than I when it comes to these things, but I was curious why your speedo-cable failed? Reason I ask is mine stopped working and I was in the process of figuring out how to replace it when I took the dash apart to investigate. I could see where the cable detached itself from the gauge and made a greasy mess inside. I threw on some new grease and reconnected it and it started working again. I realize that's not the only case, and I am sure you already checked that out, but thought I would post anyways. Maybe someone else has a problem more similar to the one I had. Laters!

Just age and miles I figure. It's 22 years old with 262K miles on it. My speedo had been bouncing a bit at low speeds for a while. For the last few years I've been fighting having to replace the cable by pulling the cable itself out of the housing, lubing it with a lithium grease & dry graphite mixture and reinstalling. Worked like new every time I did that, but I had to do it every year. I forgot the last couple years and a part of it just seized inside the housing and the cable snapped. I was hoping it would've just been like your case, and had backed off of the speedo, but when I went to pull the cable out, I only got half of it. I REALLY hope my speedo itself didn't seize (I doubt that's the case) so I'll test it first once I get the dash out. I've never had to replace the entire assembly, so hopefully it won't be a huge pain in the ass.

Damn... well good luck. In the mean time I have been checking my resources on a FJ62 for parts. Maybe we can get lucky before you commit to purchase the cable and find one with a reasonably new 62 cable... worth a try.

We have one. Check out the broken teeth thread.

Well My plan to get a used cable to run until I could effectively plan out an electronic speedo conversion didn't pan out. Simple reason being that I couldn't find one that was anywhere close in appearance to the factory gauges, or meet my criteria for what I wanted to see in my dash. So I went ahead and coughed up $92 for a new Toyota cable assembly from CDan. Hopefully I can swap cables out within just a few hours and there's no prep necessary on the new cable other than installation itself. Looks like my two days I get off after working three weeks straight are going to be taken up with Celica maintenance and Cruiser repairs :bang:
