I have a friend(neighbor) that owns a 1953 Willys Jeep. He inherited it from his grandfather.

He rebuilt the carb on it and it still won't run. When he rebuilt it he couldn't find where one cable went to, presumably, on the carb.

There are only three cables that run to it(the carb). One is obviously the choke, one runs to the throttle on the bottom of the carb and the third has no home and I couldn't find any obvious location for it........by setting it to rest(as in I let the cable hang loose in its clamp to see where it naturally want to go) it looked as though it wanted to connect to the same basic place the second cable went.

The cable is connected to a knob on the dash to the left of the choke cable.

Sorry I don't have any pictures yet. I will try to get some soon.

If you can help please let me know.

yeah I was just getting ready to post what I had figured out. I too had decided it was a hand throttle.

Now a stupid second question......He shouldn't need that hooked up in order to start it should he?

he does not need it hooked up.

is it getting gas?

have you pulled the plugs to see if they are wet? it may be flooded

do you have spark?

Well It is kind of a funny story when you mention plugs.

The motor is getting fuel I believe and since the carb is open to the air it has air.

He went to pull a plug wire off and the wire shredded and ripped in half. So I know the wires need changing. Another thing that seemed peculiar to me. While trying to crank it with my holding the ripped plug wire to the plug with a pair of insultated pliers, of course, he wasn't getting any spark....and then all of a sudden it actually tried to start and the wire was arching charge to the plug.

It is like the dist. is intermitten. I told him he needed to get new plug wires, including the wire that goes to the coil....and to clean out his gas tank. He took the dist cap off and it looked clean and all 4 contacts looked good no visible wear.

He is really wanting to get this thing running so maybe I will have an update with progress.

I might even be able to post some pics of the old Willys

I'd sand the points if you can. Could be sitting has caused them to corrode a bit. My uncle and I have a 1953 Willys M28A1. Military version, 24 Volt and all that jazz. Thats what we had to do.
