Was going through some pics of last years Expo east and came across this guy. Keen interest in who did this roof.

I believe he is a MUD member and did a write up on this in the 80 section. If I come across it I will post the link up.

Not the same truck

One in the build is a VX with VX badges and stripe with a snorkel and different bumper than the one the OP posted.

Still that is a nice build thread thanks for posting that.

I wonder how much more road noise that huge hole in the roof adds ????

Cant help the overall structure of the truck either

Most pop top conversions on vehicles I've seen use factory sunroofs or a small hole cut in the roof

Yea, thanks all, Im trying to get a handle on a company that isnt overseas to gauge feasibility on getting this done to the troopy. I know from talking to folks im looking at about 7-9 k, so i realize the cost. Most of the folks that do this here are vehicle specific (flippack or the element folks)

My guess is that a commercially produced unit is available for your rig in Australia, perhaps South America somewhere. If that is correct, I can handle the install for you.

I might take you up on that offer @NCFJ if i can find an economical way to get it here. Theres an opposite but equal therory my wife has with money spent on trucks.... When i built my first truck, she got a house, when i bought my fridge and slide, she bought a car.... waiiiiiiit a minute.... :-D

LOL, you laugh. My wife's 80 is in better shape than mine at this point and will be getting a Vortec swap before mine.

I have no first hand knowledge but from what I have read recently the exchange rate between us and OZ is favorable currently

currently 1 AUD = .78 USD

That appears to be the camp teq option that you posted originally. Were made for a short time in California but no longer in production. Owner states he may fire it back up or sell the plans. I should be able to find that members name once home on the computer. He is in Tennessee I believe. But that is the same top that Land Cruiser Phil runs. It was made in two versions remove the whole roof or simply access via sunroof. You should be able to search camp teq in either 80s tech or on expedition portal And find a few

a fairly common one is to take a westy top and put on your own rig..... Doesn't seem too hard from what I've seen.

If its that easy and your looking for work...... ;). Cutting holes in trucks is always easy. It's the making it leak and rattle proof and still functionable that would scare me

I've only seen one westy top on an 80 but wonder why more dont attempt it. And there was a recent flipac conversion as well in 80s tech.

And for reference I believe the campteq unit was 4500 or so. Install was extra above that

Most build threads i've seen is get the top from a westy, do some fiberglass chopping of the basket on the front, cut hole in roof and reinforce. Or find someone to do it for you.

How do those westy tops work on the inside? Do you crawl through the small hole and then sleep on a mattress that's on top of the roof? Maybe this is something I need to do to Moonshine.

Normally like this

Ignore that it is actually a vw camper. The hole would be much smaller on a burban or cruiser.

The link I posted to expo has some good pictures on how his works.
