I picked up Jeep YJ cheap from a family friend and the ideas are flowing...:)

So I'm going to be keeping an eye out for some 80's series axles if anyone runs into a set please let me know.

Check ebay. There has been a front 80 series axle on there for months. I think the last I saw it was down to 4 or 5 and change plus shipping from CALI IIRC. I have a dock in the North Valley and that would help on your freight if needed.

I'm not going to be picky about locked or unlocked. If I find a set with lockers then great, they will go on the cruiser. My price range is what I deem reasonable, I'm not in a hurry.

I had just checked ebay before posting here, i'll look again.

Thanks for the responses guys.

My first thought is to put domestic axles in it? More common, less issues with std-metric fasteners, lines, drive shafts, etc, are the heep rear axles offset?

Complete Dana 44 axles can be found for a couple hundred apiece, while 80 axles are a steal if you find one for under $600.

Since you asked if anyone have some 80 series axles they want to sell, I have a few sets that I might sell, please let me know your price range if you are interested. I am in no hurry to sell them either :)

I have a set form my 92 that I swapped out. i sent you a PM...

Thanks Rhino for the referral...

Initialy my two thoughts on it were:

1) Common spares between the cruiser and the heep
2) Toyota engineering.

While I realize that the Dana series is commonly available, almost any swap that is worth my time would take almost as much time as the Cruiser axles. I'd be looking a couple to few hundred for the axles (44's or 60's) and still be stuck with an axle that is breakage prone.

As far as the standard/metric thing goes - that jeep is completely random in the fasteners. Some are metric, some are standard. A stupid number are Standard-metric-ish.

There are a couple options with dealing with the offset. The jeep currently has the 2.5 liter 4cyl in it which makes me lean heavily towards an engine swap. So if i'm going to do an engine swap, why not put a Toyota drivetrain as well? Otherwise the offset could be dealt with via the driveshaft, although that is a little :hillbilly:

It gets deeper!:D My first thought for a Toyota motor swap would be a 3.4 or 2.7 from a Tacoma/Runner, their transfer output is centered.:D The front output is driver's side, by swapping an early gear driven transfer it can be moved to passenger side.

How wide are the stock axles? Maybe mini axles would be a better swap? Or find a wrecked, rolled, Tacoma/Runner and body swap?:hillbilly: One of the guys that comes to AZRocks from Texas has a heep body on a Taco frame, drive train.

Right now I'm just exploring options.

I like the mini truck option, I'll have to look into that as well. But then again, who wants something common? =)

I forgot point three and four of my thoughts:

3) I'll be looking to rebuild the motor in the 80 at some point - preferably with a brand spankin new block from Toyota in preparation for some sort of forced induction. So I could find another 1FZ, have the head worked on, slap the head on a new block and put it in the 80. Then I would take the motor from the 80 and put that in the heep. I need to check weights/dimensions. Right now these are just musings.

4) My Jeep buddies think I "saw the light" and came over to real trucks. This would be a great way to spite them.

The general idea of the plan is some kind of streetable rock toy that I don't mind or worry about abusing the hell out of.

A small wheelbase stretch is probably in order along with these other ideas. Especially if I'm going to fit an 80's drive train into it.

The FZJ80 drive train is probably longer than the heep, not to mention it probably weighs more than the rest of the heep!:D A 1FZ is too long to fit under the hood of a FJ40 with the fan/radiator, no way it's fitting under a heep hood.:hillbilly:

Why are you giving me this kind of tough decision to make :)? I will need more time to think about this.

I'll give you $6.00 Jackson...

Tools -

I went out and did some crude measurements of the trucks.

The Land Cruiser is 2" longer firewall to radiator than the YJ. It looks good to me motor wise. The 80's drivetrain is 4" longer fan to output shaft. That would need some work. Height might be an issue.

I wouldn't want to use the auto from the Land Cruiser, so I might be able to find something shorter that would work.

Does anyone have a 1FZ/tranny/transfercase sitting about that I could measure more accurately?

I found a weight of 584 lbs for the 1FZ-FE, I recall reading an LT1 is somewhere around 550 pounds and the stock 4.0 liter that came in the Jeep is 515 pounds. About a 12% difference in weight. Not terrible.

I could always mate an LT1 and tranny to an offset gearbox to overcome the issue as well. Using the 1FZ would let me kill two birds with one stone.
