I searched but couldn't find anything on this topic. I have been hearing a noise when the AC comes on, coming from the compressor area. But when I started it earlier, it made a different funny noise for several seconds, and then I could smell something like rubber burning. With the vehicle running, and the AC off, it looks like the pulley that the belt is spinning wobbles a little bit, and it makes a faint noise. Then when the AC is on the noise gets worse, kind of a tap tap tap, but not a sharp noise, maybe like a scrub scrub scrub? and the pulley seems to maybe wobble a little more, and I get a faint rubber smell for a few seconds. Don't have any problems with the AC. 95k on the vehicle and its had a hot life in FL and SC since the beginning, so that AC has been running a lot. Could the compressor clutch be going out? Im not real knowledgeable about AC systems in general, looking for input on this.

I am definitely not an expert in this, but if your idler pulley is wobbling, then it sounds like a bearing in that is going out, which could then put undue tension or misalignment on the belt, which could then be rubbing on something that would give you the burnt rubber smell and noise. I would suggest looking very closely at that pulley to see if you can either replace the bearings or replace the whole unit.

If you had problems with bearings on the compressor or something mechanical that is providing a large mechanical load on the belt, I would expect you would see or hear slippage directly on the compressor and NOT a wobbly pulley.

Those are my fairly uninformed thoughts... I hope it helps.

I used the word pulley but I actually meant the clutch on the compressor itself is what I see a little wobble in, but its very slight. Im talking with an independent Toyota shop in the area and will be taking it in to them. Im starting to think it might be the compressor itself starting to seize up....

Well, that sucks if it is... those are kinda spendy.

Seems to be the compressor clutch. If possible, remove the AC belt (year 95-97) don't know about older.

Denso compressors are like $200 plus expansion valve and drier.

This is on my 200, but I think you are right and it is just the clutch.

So it seems the clutch started to fail and the wobbling ate up the shaft on the compressor, so the clutch and compressor has to be replaced. $400 for new OEM Denso Compressor with Clutch
