good evening, name is callum, live in the uk,
been looking round for the last couple of days and now have a question...

been looking at getting an 80 series. my budget doesn't stretch to a nice one, so i'm currently looking at a stolen recovered one which has apparantly been used in a ram raid. Its also a fair distance away, so i sent a friend's sister, who lives nearby to take a look. the guy at the breakers selling it said it had tow batteries, but one was missing so it couldn't be started.

do they all have two batteries, this seems a touch odd?
as its been stolen, the driver's lock and ignition are both broken. any idea how much such items would be likely to cost.

hmmm, other questions...it has covered 185 000 miles. i wouldn't have thought this would be a problem for the 4.2 diesel, is it likely to be, or for any other bits of the car.

oh, with regards to the broken lock and ignition, would toyota be able to supply these for the specific vehicle or would i have to buy a whole new set of locks.

thanks for your help

I can answer some.

Yes it is normal to have two batteries. Diesel's have much higher compression and many require two batteries to turn over.

I have repaired a few vehicles that were stolen and damaged the same as yours. You will not need new locks all the way around. You will need a new steering column assembly and ignition and those installed could run you around $500 in the US anyways, not sure about over there.

185k on a diesel? I would say the engine could double that, but whether the drive train could do it again, not so sure.

Welcome by the way "insert finger smiley"

thanks for the help
i'm gonna phone my local toyota dealer tomorrow and get an estimate on parts, see if it is viable purchase. I currently drive a land rover 110, which i'm quite happy with and have done a lot of work to, but its a bit slow and could do with an engine transplant, which i'm not sure i can be bothered with. the landcruiser already has a nice big diesel and a turbo attached to it and is about the same size, so i'm looking into that as an alternative, although i came across this one quite by accident.

here's some pics of the vehicle in question. its pretty beaten up but seems not too bad apart from the damage done when the thieves broke in. i'm not too worried about the body damage, have been reading the custom rear bumper fabrication posts with afiar bit of interest :D

oh, with regards to the locks, do you think toyota will be able to supplya single lock and ignition that would allow me to keep a single key rather than having different keys for different doors?

Looking at the pics it is a pre 95 model 1hdt disel engine, which will need the big end bearings checked, and / or replaced, if they havent been [aprox $400 Aus to do] and is done in car by removing sump.

They ran 2 batts in Eurpoe, for cold weather starting, with high cca to run starter and glow plugs, etc etc.

If you check out the 80 series list at www.lcool.org there are afew members in your area who have done this, and have the model youa re looking at, as well as some tech articles etc on the 1hdt 80.

Most on here are US 4.5 petrol auto models.

Wow... that thing's rough as a cobb. I'd give it a good look over and list all the things you'll need to fix (with costs) to make sure you know (and the dealer) what you're getting into. Definitely a canidate for a pre-buy inspection by a qualified mechanic.

Good luck.

Callum.
you should be able to get just the ignition barrel and possibly the steering column out of a salgvaged cruiser if you can find one. then you can have a locksmith key the rest of the cylinders to match. I would key to the new key pattern with the ignition as it previously had some bad mojo attached.

i phoned toyota today, and their parts prices dont seem too bad. they guy in the parts dept. was pretty sketchy as he didn't have the chassis number and many details on the vehicle, but that side seems reasonably promising. I've done an online car breakers search so i'll see what they turn up.

quite a handy site lcool.org, some good info there.

just need to find out what my insurance would be like and get a look at the other photos that got taken. Still not sure whether i should give this one a wide berth.

thanks for all the help.

does that damaged D pillar make anyone else nervous?

did they back in to a concrete bridge with it, or what??

it makes me a bit nervous, too --

My 80 has a small D pillar dent in about the same spot. Not nearly that big. Mine doesn't make me nervous at all.

I thought about trying to 'ding king' it out.

I want that engine.... !

the damage apparantly comes from its involvement in a ram raid. i'm not sure which end when throught the shop window, presumably the front and maybe some part of the shop fell on the d pillar or something. assuming the dent hasn't caused any nasty distortion, it could maybe be hit out. i dont know yet, still at the stage of putting out some feelers about the vehicle to see whether is worth it or not.

let me draw your attention to the way the upper portion of the rear door lines up with the US DS d pillar.... there's quite a gap and it looks to be about equal from the roofline down to the upper/lower union. if the door were simply ajar the gap would be minimal at the top and wider at the bottom. the US PS side of the liftgate appears to be snug right up against the body. either the d pillar is deformed or the hinge on the liftgate is banged up...

maybe i'm just a nervous nelly or maybe the picture is presenting a funny angle, but i just don't like to mess around with the support over my occupants' noggins.

its a 91-2 model year.

Here is one

As the label on the timing belt cover says Christo its a 1HDFT, The solid bar grille and turbo stickers make the pre 93 he is looking at a 1HDT :flipoff2:

PS 1hdt looks like a 1hz with a cross over pipe over the rocker cover with TURBO on it.

well, i got some photos back of the vehicle and i think i might give it a miss. for anyone that's intersted, here's a pic of the damage to the interior. The wiring rather scares me as i think it would be a major headache to put right again and there's quite a few bits of trim required. i'd post more photos, but i think i'm at my limit, i'll see if i can fit one of the engine bay, which aint terrible nice, at least in comparison to 'sleeoffroad's one.

any opinions on the matter?

hmm, not enough space to upload the engine bay image at the moment, shall have to clear another picture.
