Has anyone ever removed and/or relocated the shark fin antenna on top, in the rear of our GX's?
Two reasons I would like to relocate it:
  1. Satellite radio is sporadic with my roof top tent on. I get better reception when my vehicle is pointed in certain directions on the compass/aligned with the satellite.
  2. I'd like to slide some solar panels under my roof rack. I have the space but I can't slide them in the rear because the antenna is a little too high and blocks being able to slide anything in there.
I'm curious just how hard it is to access and relocate. I don't want to have to tear out my whole head liner.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Here is a good writeup for a 4runner. GFC (Go Fast Campers) RTT Install on 5th Gen 4Runner
Maybe the antenna cover will work on a gx?

That's actually a pretty good DIY on how to access and remove an antenna, albeit, a 4Runner. But there are a lot of similarities. The only issues is they have an after market, 3D printed replacement antenna. I'd have to design a new antenna on my SoildWorks and then print it on my 3D printer. And that means having to dry all my 3D printer filament and getting my printer working again. Not to mention having to design the antenna housing.
Hummm... May have to wait until summer when there's no rain or moisture because this will not be a one day project.

Interesting that they call it a "Telephone Antenna". I wonder if it's optimized for cell service?
I just know my satellite radio reception sucks with my RTT on.
Now, having a good idea of how to relocate it... Where should I relocate it TO???
I'm going to think on that a while.
I don't want it on my RTT because I may want to take it off.
I don't have any open air space on any other place on my roof, front, sides or rear. My RTT fits over my entire roof.

One thing I was thinking was placing it on a flat rod, straight out the rear, slightly over hanging the rear door. Since the door swings out and not up, that may work.
Another option may be to attache it right on top of the rear door. Just run cable down along the D pillar and out to the door.

I'm open to any other suggestions. This is the time for all you engineers out there to really shine! ;)

A hood ornament would be a great location for it!

Mounting it on the rear door wing/fairing thing that hangs over the rear window is about the only place I could think of that it may be easy to relocate and get it out in the open a little.

Will the GPS work without it? I want to delete it.

Not a fan of xm/sirrus whatever they call themselves this year.

GPS antenna is in dash above nav unit. Shark fin is for SAT radio and Enform phone services. Radio antennas are in the rear side windows
