Anyone changed the front wheel bearing on a mid 90s fwd toyota car?

Do you have to unbolt the tie rods etc. and remove the whole hub assembly and press the bearing out? That's what it looked like when I pulled the wheel off last night.

97 avalon

Dunno about the Avalon, but on a Camry (should be the same) you just undo the nut, take off the caliper, replace the bearing(s) and seal(s) and reassemble.

Uh, you left out some steps, I think. Were you able to pull the cv shaft out the back side?

It looks like on this avalon, you have to pull the entire hub assembly.

Honestly I don't remember.

My wife wrecked the Camry in '04....

I have the e-manual.....be back in a bit.

Yup, you were right.

You have to pull the hub assembly and press the bearing out. Send me your mail address and I'll send you that page from the FSM.....

:ban:Fighting one now......bearing was welded(got to hot) to the spindle. Fyi think twice about changing the long side cv on one of these things

When I ordered bearings for ours from CruiserDan- he kinda said "are you sure you want to do this repair yourself?" I said, sure, I've got a shop press and all. Ended up taking it to the repair shop and having them do it. Royal PITA!

I changed both front wheel bearings and the cv shafts on both sides.

What trouble did you have with the long side? I thought that it was easier than the short side. Of course once I figured out that the short side simply popped out of the case, it was easy. The long side just had a snap ring to remove and the whole shaft slid out.

I had to cut the inner race off of the hub after I pressed the bearing off. I don't have a bearing puller...

Dude, if you have a press, it's a piece of cake. If you don't have a bearing puller, you will have to cut the inner race off of the hub with a grinder/dremel.

I live in the rust belt. Even when i took the snap ring off the axle still would not slide out......so I ended up taking that bracket assembly out and to achieve that the motor mounts needed to come loose.

:whoops:Mine(bearing) was welded inside the spindle so i choose to get another spindle for 70 bucks. I did manage to get all but the outer part of the bearing out but like i said the rest was welded. Never in my life have i seen a bearing do that.

Initially on that side (drivers) i was just going to change the brakes but when i noticed the hub assembly almost cheery hot it was time for a change. QUESTION ...would you change that CV after that spindle got that got? Boot and all looks good along with i never heard the notorious clicking noise on that side.

I would not change the cv shaft unless you hear the clicking or like in this case, it was roaring. If the boots are fine and you don't hear any noise, I wouldn't worry.

That's a bitch. I'm glad I didn't have to do that.
