Anyone attending Overland Expo West 2016?

Looks like weekend camping is sold out. Does anyone have any experience with off site camping and taking the shuttle?
The expo site is surrounded by national forest open to free camping. There are a few forest service roads directly across the road from the event with many established sites. A quick walk, bike ride, or drive down to the event. Feel free to ask any more specific questions about the area or event. I live in Flag and have attended the event each year. Hope to see many of you there.

Thanks for the local info!
I may throw a tent in the truck after all!

By "free camping," do you mean you can camp without having to be in an established, controlled campsite area?

Do you have a specific location in that "open area" you would recommend for tent camping? -Perhaps a place fewer people would know about? If so, I'd love to stay Saturday night and spend a bit more time on Sunday before driving all the way back.

Thanks for the tips!

Yes, the camping is just in the beautiful coconino national forest. It is not a camp ground or traditional campsite area. Just open forest. I will get you the specific forest service road numbers I camp on a bit later today. You will just drive down the FS road for about a mile which actually heads towards the event and choose any spot you wish to camp. Trying to use a previously established site; which will be evident and usually have a fire pit already constructed. The further you head back of off the main road the better the sites get because of lesser use.

Wow. Thanks! I'll look for your post. I wish more areas were open use like that.

Definitely. It is a major benefit of living in this area. The event has decent bathrooms for cleaning up also. One more tip is when traveling down Lake Mary Road from Flagstaff take the first right turn onto Morman Lake Road you come to. The signs usually try and send you around the entire lake. It is a nicer drive and you will see all of the forest service roads on your right. Drive in until you get to the event then go back a bit and choose the best road and spot you would like to camp on. I'm pretty sure we head up on FR 90N, but there may be one closer.

Yikes. Forecast for Flagstaff includes winds 25-35mph with gusts to *50MPH* this weekend.

Might be an interesting opportunity to see how roof-top tents fare...among other doodads...

I just checked into my hotel; it's been sprinkling since I arrived an hour ago. Sadly, I don't have a 200 Series yet.

But I'm looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you there at the expo. If any of you guys want to get together tonight I'm totally up for it. ☺

Man! You're bringing up some great memories of that entire area. We lived in Phoenix for roughly 6+ years and just went almost everywhere. FR300 (Rim road) is by far our favorite.
