Anybody have any MPG and octane observations

There seems to be alot of misconceptions about octane ratings around here. Pretty much use the lowest grade octane you can where your motor doesn't knock is a good rule of thumb. Higher octane just means your fuel is less susceptible to pre-ignition, that is your fuel will not ignite before it should.

Here is a quick link I just found:

http://theserviceadvisor.com/octane.htm

Aircraft fuel wouldn't be bad for your cruiser other than the fact it is leaded. Also octane booster, xylene, or tourlene will just increase your octane which isn't needed unless you have pre-ignition issues. All the extra octane will probably decrease fuel economy since there is a good chance you will get a lot of unburnt gas going out the exhaust.

there is more to octane than preignition, a higher octane fuel burns slower giving a lower peak pressure but over a longer period, this longer lower pressure is more effecient at producing power and easier on parts

older hiogher octane AVGas has been known to overheat exhuast valves when used in auto's, most of the time it is now 100LL not as bad

I think I remember reading in the manual 87 or higher, which to me would indicate as already said that if you do not have knocking or pinging issues to run the lower octane and you should have no problems. My rig having the turbo requires a minimum of 91 octane according to safari and since there is no such grade in VA I am forced to run 93. Most people I know running the cheaper stuff are getting the same MPG that I am running the high grade so I don't think octane is indicative of higher or lower gas mileage. Just 02

I still don't know where you are going with this issue?

Just use 87, your curiser doesn't fall into the catagory of the first paragraph. If it did, we would have 1/2 a billion Japanese cars exploding all around us, would we not?

Now here's my tangent alert, I have a F150 that's 8.4 to 1 but stock I was cramming 10 psi of boost on top of that, I only run 91 or medium grade. A stock LC runs ?? 9.0 which is pretty run of the mill for an average Japanese car. So why does anyone think that they need gas > 85? I've seen Mustangs <puke alert> that run 13.0 on 93 and get away with it.

probably bedcause I am not trying to go anywhere with this issue, I run 93 becaus I hate to hear pinging on acceleration and it makes me feel better , (although I have never tried 87 in the cruiser this habit was set long ago) not trying to sell anyone on 93 becuase it is not worth it, but I am still interested to hear any reason not to run 93 as I cannot se how it could cause any harm

I recently started carpooling to work I will only have to drive to work (35 miles on way ) every third week

I probably shpuld still try the 87 and see if I cna hear any pinging

I think someone else stated that it will ONLY hurt your pocket book. :)

But somthing is really wrong with your Cruiser (assuming is not SC) if your pinging on anything?

I'm NA and have run all over NM and CO mountains and have never pinged off of 85 octane much less 93??????

Have you checked your fuel filter, injectors, timing, sparkplug wires, and etc?

If you're truely pinging you could be removing the tops of your pistons off. IMO this qualifies for a Toyota service soon, real soon, like yesterday.

read that post again, I do not have pinging in the cruiser
