I was considering an Odyssey 34R-1500 but now I'm thinking of dropping one of the 31M-2150's in the truck to enable longer engine off accessory time. Anyone using one of these? How's the fit etc?
We have a PC2150 on the pilot's side and a PC1500 on the co-pilots side. We took out the stock battery box and used Odyssey's battery hold down brackets for an easy fit and finish.
We also opted to connect both batteries directly in parallel but connected the loads per Odyssey's write up to maximize both batteries. The loads see just one, big battery.
I don't have the Odyssey but the Sears Die Hard Platinum group 31. (same dimensions) It fits in the OEM tray but I had to make a slightly longer tie down bar, then able to re-use the OEM j-hooks.
Honestly the tie down example above is much better. The OEM j-hooks are pretty maxed out with the extra weight of the group 31.
Then for the record previously I had an Optima group 31. That fit better with no mods to the OEM tray/tie downs. My experience with the Optima was good but it pre-dated the move to Mexico for manufacturing.
I've been running a single group 31 now for 6 years. Its done all I've ever needed it to with the Fridge 24/7/365 and additional accessory loads.
I'm using one for Aux in the stock tray. I had to trim the fins, side & back, with a Dremel. Used 3/4" x 3/4" x 1/8" AL angle for the new hold-down bar. To clear the hood - J-hooks had to be trimmed and replaced the wing nuts for nylock. It's tight. Edit: I also used longer generic J-hooks.
The First Odyssey 31 started leaking after 3 months due to a faulty silicone seal (vent). Called and they directed me to the nearest retailer who had one in stock. Switched it out in their parking lot in San Diego the same day I called. Great customer service.
The replacement is still going strong after ROUGH use. Including winching with the engine off, until there was no juice left (20 mins). That's what I expect - Made in the USA.
The trick for long life is a good charger and trying not to go below 50%. I get 3 days out of the 31 with fridge, LED lights, fan and charger before I have to plug in or use solar.
Like Corbet said, you'll need to make a longer bar, but I also had to buy longer J-hooks. This battery is the same exact fit, no other mods done to fit.
