there's a troopy there i need some help with. it's too far for me to look at, and was wondering if someone would check it out for me.

I just replied to this on the 40 page. I can go there for you. I can toss a baseball to SOR from my office.

Just got your pm. I went by yesterday and check out the troopy at SOR. I wasn't planning on going, so I didn't have my digicam. I'm going back next week and I'll get some good pics for you. Over all it seems to be in good shape. Started right up. There's some rust/rot under the rear doors, and it may have been rolled over on the passenger side. You really can't tell from the outside, but on the inside at the roofline, you can see some damage that looks like it been pounded out. Marv said he's got a replacement panel. I'll look at it in more detail when I go back, but it seemed to be pretty solid.

thanks junky,
marv said he was gonna send me some more pics. so, if there is something you think i should see, send em' on. i'm not too worried about it being laid on it's side, but the rust in the amby doors- i did not tknow about. the price usually justifies everything and this one seems to be in order.

i'm really considering this one, so honest opions would be greatly appreciated.

I saw that rig yesterday. It looks ok. It's from Saudi Arabia, so there is not much rust. The problem I have with it is the price. It seems a tad bit more than a little too much. Granted you do have to tack on a novelty surcharge, but still. A few years ago, I seriously considered buying a 47 series troopy. In the end, I could not get around the fact that I could get a real nice 40, 55, or 60 for less $$ than the troopy that was in decent shape. I feel the same way about this one.

BTW, FWIW, I wound up getting a nice 60 instead of the 47 and I have no regrets.

that's usually how i look at it too. i could definitley buy a nice 60 for $9500. but, in the end, it's still not a troopy. i was thinking i would keep the troopy, where a 60, 40 or 55 i would eventually sell.

i appreciate your opinion as i don't have much to compare the price to. at first i thought it was a great price, but now i'm having second thoughts.

Not a problem. Wish I could be more help/give you some better info. I snapped a few pics, but they came out terrible. Not sure what happened there. Marv said he sent you some though.

I've bought a few cars sight unseen before. It's a scary proposition. You form opinions based on pictures, but sometimes when you see the vehicle in person, it doesn't live up. For me, if I was spending $9500, my expectations would be pretty high. Then, if a rig like the one in question showed up, I'd be disappointed.

I'm wondering how you'd get it home if you did go ahead and buy it. If you were going to ship it, it would cost another $700-1000. Maybe it would be wise to fly out here, look at it in person, and drive it home if you like. To me, that would be like insurance. If you saw it and did not like it, you'd have wasted $300 on a plane ticket, but in reality you saved yourself thousands. If you did like it, the airfare + gas would probably be just a little more than shipping costs. Plus, it would be a fun ride home.

Just my thoughts. Best of luck to you.

That's how I look at it too. I really wanted a LV. Someone I know suggested that I buy his 60, since it had disc brakes, power steering, etc, for $1000 less than I was gonna pay for my 45LV. Bottom line was, I didn't want a 60, I wanted an old rugged drum brake, three on the tree LV. I put 100+ miles per day on it and I love every minute behind the wheel. You seem set on a troopy so I say stick with what you really want. I'll get you some good pics when I get back from the desert.

could you elaborate on what the dissapointing parts would be?? i got some good pics from marv and saw the rust through in the rear corners and where they beat up the inside of the top. marv said he could get me another panel for that. i also saw that the seats were worn pretty good, and it looked like the po welded the spare tire latch to the rear. some nice size scratches and bumps in the top. anything else that was an obvious? i hate not being able to see it in person.

Maybe it would be wise to fly out here, look at it in person, and drive it home if you like.

i would love to do this and am trying to figure out how. i'm already taking off work for other obligations and just don't see it as a practical means to get it home. it's a good 3, maybe 4 day trip. and that's pushing it.

I'll get you some good pics when I get back from the desert.

more pics would be great.

does anyone know if marv will negotiate, or does he usually stick to his guns.

thanks to everyone for helping.

Mississppi,

When I say I'd be disappointed, that is strictly due to the price of the rig. As I said, I know you gotta pay a little extra for the unusual vehicle, plus all the importation work is done, etc., but the bottom line is that to me, that is no $9500 rig. For that kinda $$, I would want and expect something in nicer condition. That's just me though. We all have our own expectations.

As far as "negotiating" with Marv, I've attempted to do so on two different occasions. Both went exactly the same:

Me: "How much do you want?"

Him: "xxx dollars."

Me (after looking at and driving the rig): "Will you take $XX (slightly below asking price)

Him (thinking): "No, I don't think so."

Me: "How 'bout $X? (Offering a little more)

Him: "No."

Me (after making a couple other higher offers): "What will you take?"

Him: "I don't think I can go below the original asking price."

Get the picture? That is my personal experience.

well, i just talked to marv again, and he's gonna send me some pictures of a few other troopies he has up there. i believe they are all rhd, though. i'm not gonna limit myself to just this one because it's lhd, although i would rather have a lhd.

i'm only interested in the troopy, but like wagonsrule said, i don't want to be dissapointed when i get it, so i'm gonna look at as many as i can.
