At the risk of sounding like a complete DA, I hate asking a question for which the answer is probably looking me in the face.........oh well, here it goes:

After all of the years of changing diff fluids, I have never found it to be a very pleasant experience. As such, I thought I'd ask the board if I've overlooked any device that makes the job easier (I usually place a flexible tube on the nipple on the end of the bottle. Furthermore, provided there's enough room to get the bottle in position to squeeze it, it's generally no problem. However, on most applications, the bottle is almost impossible to invert and squeeze..........well, you probably know the problem)

I've looked at various parts stores, but I've never found anything satisfactory to overcome the problem........I'm probably missing something really obvious, so I was wondering if any of you can suggest some sort of plunger/large syringe/etc. that could be filled with gear oil and operated to make this procedure more manageable.

NOTE: I put this post here because I'm about to change the front/rear diff fluids on my 99 LX470

Any suggestions?

I've used a pumping mechanism that screws on the diff fluid container for some time... works by 'pumping' a piston on the top.

I believe that Snap-On makes a syringe type tool you can use; assume others make it too.
 
They sell the pumps at wal-mart. You can use lower-unit oil for outboard motors in your diffs in a pinch, and they all come with the pumps. They're just a generic hand pump, but they work relatively efficiently. Perhaps you could buy a sacrificial container of lower-unit oil and just rob the pump from it. They might also be sold seperately, I'm not sure.

5-6 gallon pail of gear lube. $30 lid with hand pump and hose, most oil/fuel suppliers sell em, takes justs min and ALOT less mess.

You can also get an air powered lid and pump that conects to your compresor and pump the lube in. Very fast and clean. Very nice to get to those high X-Fer plugs without getting that wonderful 90 weight smell all over you.

I have not done it yet, but I was thinking when the time comes to do the diffs in using one of those fertilizing/pest control pumps to do it.
They hold one gallon and have a hand pump that seems to achieve good pressure, just need to take off the spraying handle and use the hose for filling the diffs.
I will report when I try it.
 
I would think the gear lube would be to thick to pump, but maybe not........

Here is what we call the PIG in the ship. 5 gallon air tank converted to oil dispenser.

I wish I could justify that :idea: but I don't think so :mad:
 
I bought a cheapo container of diff oil with a separate pumping device. I tossed out the cheapo oil, put the good stuff in, and pumped away. It was quite easy.
 
I also have a pump, but I have never seen them at our Walmart, looked many times. The pump I have is on a 1-qt container it fits good on, so then I just dump my new gearoil in there and go for it. It's still not perfect, since normally you pump until it starts coming out, so having a rag handy is useful, then the container falls over, hose lands in your hair, etc... :D
