Driving 250 miles oct 29 I-70 from Vail to Moab. I have always driven the 40. I now own a 98 uzj100. It seem to me there are no problems with the weight. I need to wire the lights and install tow bar. Upgrade to grade 8 bolts to keep the bumper on. Pull the rear drive shaft. Am I missing anything? I am going to try to put as much weight in the 100 and keep the 40 as empty as possible. I really hope I don't hit snow through Glenwood Canyon on the way home. 100 is stock. 40 rides on 33's lockrite in the rear.

As long as you can put the X-fer case in N it won't spin the transmission and you're golden in my opinion. If your tranny is going to be turning with the wheels then you've gotta have an output side lube pump I would guess.

edit: if you're gonna pull the d-shaft then you should be set.

bad for tranny

As I understand. Many transmissions do not lubricate well when the only thing spinning is the out put side of things. When in any other gear gear lube is flying everywhere. No lube=$$$ There are many rigs that it is not a problem, the lc 4 spd is one of them. Also the more that spins the more that wears. Probably not important only going 250 miles. I guess I like take things apart, so off the driveshaft comes.

No problem pulling a 40 behind the 100. Have towed the 40 behind the 80 many times. Be carefull as you may forget it's back there  :D

I think this is true for a transmission, but why on earth would you be spinning the tranny. You would put the t/c in neutral therefore the tranny doesn't spin at all. The t/c should be fine, it has a sort of lube-pump in them I think, but anything like that is most likely driven off the rear output shaft, and since that's spinning and you're pulling it forwards (if all in reverse that might be a problem) then it should be fine.

Probably preferred to pull driveshafts just to reduce wear but I don't think it's necessary.

oh yeah t case.. I think I have one. Whats it for?

Yep. I kind of forgot about the t case. Trannys not moving. Still I'll pull the rear driveshaft. I've gotten a little smarter and figured out I don't need to pull the front one. I'm a little slower than most people. All those years half baked. Or half those years fully baked. Wonder why they call it dope?
Ok so why can't you flat tow a 80 or 100? Or can you if you pull the drive shafts?

I keep looking for the driveshaft removal button on my dash, must be in the center consol next to the the seat heaters.
