Hi all,

Got a 98 100 series a few months back (170k miles)which needs a few pm's done, mostly front wheel bearing (prob replace), trans flush, rotors & shocks soon, think thats about it...

Need a shop to do the tranny, and don't think I want to tackle to wheel bearings, other than my local dealer, anyone know of a good toyota mech in or around Hickory?

Thanks

Welcome.

Would you be interested in hosting a HAMOM (Help a Member of the Month)? Wealth of knowledgeable individuals within this club and would save you a good amount $$$$ rather than going to the dealer, and you gain knowledge of how it's done for future repairs to boot.

another, less invasive method would be to drain and refill the tranny instead of flushing it and that is something you could do by yourself over the next month. I believe once youve drained, replaced, and driven the fluid about three times youve effectively replaced the old fluid. Maybe try to drain and fill over next 3-4 weekends and your done.

Do the wheel bearings and rotors at the same time b/c you are half way there and repeating labor
(* note* all 100 series info from me is subject to verification first haha)

The HAMOM is a great way too! and you get to host all us crazies at your place for the day; prepare the wifey :D

Congrats on the Hundred. I believe you had a 60/62 i believe.... did you end up selling it?

UnbreakableFab is in your neck of the woods. Granite Falls i believe. More of a hardcore fab shop but if hes slow i dont think Justin would mind w/ a lil help payin the utilites bill. If nothing else maybe he could give you a local referral.

I would love to do a HAMOM but... We've been living with family in the area waiting for our home in Florida to sell, which it just did, but now doing the great home search thus, prob need to wait till I can invite ya'll to my place, rather than the inlaws...

I've asked around a bit in the area but havn't come up with much help on anyone outside of the dealership, I need to figure out exactly what shape the brakes are in and wondering about doing the shocks too and knock it all out in one shot, the tranny is another issue though, no problems, but I was under the impression you needed the shop to use one of those exhange deals to do a good job of it, just heard alot of horror stories about mixing fluid, etc.

Thanks for the info though, hope to get down to one of your meet and greets in Charlotte something.

Also, never had a 60 series, started out looking for a 80, ended up with this 100, always looking for a 40 project (now wife says after house)

So after all this my truck needed an inspection and oil change so I took in to my local dealer and they checked it all out, I was suprised by some things, in a good and bad way, I voiced some concerns I had, also talked to previous owner, this is what was said...

Trans fluid has never been replaced (170k now) miles and Toyota said fluid looked good to them, no need to change...

Needs brakes, prev owner when purchaed it'd need them soon, so no surprise but it needs new pads, turn rotors, (all 4 wheels) and will repack bearings while in there $189.95 PER axle (sounds high to me)

Coolant flush $79.95

Flush and replace power steering fluid $89.95
Flush and replace brake fluid $89.95 (both of these seemed insane to me, but what do I know, I'm sure they do need to be replaced, but will they really flush it..., heck I can drain and refill)

Flush and replace front, middle, and rear diff's $149.95 (see above statement)

Now's heres the kicker, timing belt & water pump were replaced by prev owner @120k, approx 5 years ago, Toyo says there is no sticker to say it was done, and there's a bit of a whine there so they can do they timing belt for $359.99 + the water pump for $144... now that is the cheapest price I've seen for that, but thats the one thing on the list I think I can hold off on for a year or so.

Sounds like a good deal on the timing belt if anyone is in need of one, other stuff not so sure on.

I would never recomend a tranny flush to anyone out there that i like.

whew.... glad i added my disclaimer :p

only passing along what alot of the 80 tech guys report as their preferred method after experiencing problems after a flush possibly moved contaminants into the valve passages.
