Hi,
I really need a decent used transfer case for my 1987 FJ60. I have the stock four speed transmission. My trans case died a couple weeks ago.

I live in Seatte. Any ideas on where I might be able to find one?

I am probably breaking some for sale/wtb rules here, but I have been striking out on this lately. You all have been a huge help to me in situations like this in the past and I do appreciate it.

Any idea what "broke" on your case?

cruiserparts.net has 'em too.

And not sure how close to you-- http://www.brandonsgarage.com/ .... he's a MUD member. (check out his site, olympiafj60.net ) located south of Lacey in East Olympia

You're probably right, zulu. I don't have a garage, so I'd have to rebuild it in the back of the cruiser. Not ideal. May as well look up rebuild kits online.

Thanks for the tips, spike!

Hi Josh,

The problem with finding a decent used transfer case is that in order to install it, you need to take it nearly completely apart. Any used transfer case will need a rebuild kit, so it might be just the same to rebuild yours.

As asked above - what's wrong with yours? Why do you think you need a new one?

I live in Seattle, and just rebuilt my transfer case. I think it works, but only time will tell.

Rover, It was the idle gear shaft that walked out the back, so probably a couple of thrust washers and o-rings that need to be replaced. I may need to think about attempting this. Thanks for the leads..

Doug! We've actually met. I borrowed some tools to rebuild my knuckles about a year ago. That was a huge help. In a year's time I've acquired more tools and more knowledge but must say I am feeling a little intimidated by the idea of rebuilding a t-case.

I am wondering if I can just insert the o-rings on the idle gear shaft, along with those two thrust washers, without rebuilding the entire case.

I also did not realize that in order to install a used case it would need to be taken apart anyway. This is worth some consideration... Doug, where did you get your rebuild kit?

Thanks!
Josh
